Get To Know Our Youth Series Winners

Our Youth Committee reached out to some of our Youth Series 2015 Age Group winners over the winter. We enjoyed getting to know some of these amazing athletes. Congratulations to all who participated in the 2015 Youth Series, and we look forward to seeing you out on the race course!


Maddie Sparrow, 1st Place, Girls 9-10

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I have been racing in triathlons for four years.

What is your favorite part of racing?
I really like the bike part of the race. I also like the end when I cross the finish line, when everyone is cheering for me.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
My favorite race in the series was the Tar Heel Youth Triathlon in Cary, North Carolina.

What other sports do you play?
In addition to triathlons, I do swimming, cross-country, and ballet.

What is your favorite subject in school?
I really like Social Studies and Science.

Who is your favorite sports hero?
Stephanie Peacock is my favorite sports hero because she was a swimmer at the University of North Carolina, which is my favorite college team.

What’s your favorite app?
I like the fantasy football app, piano 3D which I am using to teach myself to play, and Rosetta Stone so I can learn French and German


Ansel Casper, 1st Place, Boys 9-10

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I have been racing triathlons since I was 7, after watching my sister, Audrey, who is two years older than me race. I knew then that triathlon was going to be my sport.

What is your favorite part of racing?
My favorite part of triathlons has always been the bike.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
My favorite race was Columbia Kidz Tri because the bike course is very fast.

What other sports do you play?
I have been swimming year-round since I was 6 and I have recently started racing in both Road and Cyclocross in cycling.

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is P.E. because you get to do fun activities while getting your energy out.

Who is you favorite sports hero?
Peter Sagan because his combination of athleticism and personality makes both his fans and competitors happy for him when he succeeds.

What is your favorite app?
Fist of Fury because it is fun to go for high scores and it lasts a while.



Kate Miller, 1st Place, Girls 7-8

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I just started this summer because a friend was racing and it sounded like fun.

What is your favorite part of racing?
I really enjoy running, swimming and biking so I like to push myself in all three and do my best.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
The Columbia Association Kids Triathlon in July. It was my first race and I was really nervous, but it ended up being a lot of fun.

What other sports do you play?
I’m the goalie on my soccer team and I play in the fall and spring. I am on a swim team during the summer and my favorite stroke is the breaststroke. I also joined Girls on the Run at my school this year and just recently ran my first 5K.

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject is Reading. I love to read books!

Who is your favorite sports hero?
My favorites are my soccer coaches, Carlos and Shay. They’ve been coaching me since I was 5 years old and they’re awesome.

What’s your favorite app?
I like watching movies and cartoons on Netflix with my little brother Ben.


Emma Kashefsky, 1st Place, Girls 11-12

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I have been doing triathlons since I was 7, so 5 years.

What is your favorite part of racing?
My favorite part of the triathlon is the bike.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
My favorite race of the three I did was Tar Heel Youth Triathlon in Cary.

What other sports do you play?
The other sports that I do are field hockey, lacrosse, mountain biking, black belt in taekwondo, and year round swimming.

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is math.

Who is your favorite sports hero?
My favorite sports hero Sheila Taormina.

What’s your favorite app?
My favorite app is Jet Pack.



Benjamin Lausch, First Place, Boys 13-15

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I have been racing since I was four years old.

What is your favorite part of racing?
My favorite part of racing triathlon is traveling to new places to race.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
My favorite race was Nottingham.

What other sports do you play?
I swim, run, and play basketball.

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school is social studies.

What’s your favorite app?
My favorite app is Snap Chat.



Landon Soroka, First Place, Boys 11-12

How long have you been racing triathlons?
I have been racing triathlons for 3 years.

What is your favorite part of racing?
I enjoy the swimming the most.

Which race in the series was your favorite?
I liked the Tar Heel Youth Triathlon #2 in Briar Chapel the most.

What other sports do you play?
I swim year round on the YOTA Swim Team and also play ultimate Frisbee.

What is your favorite subject in school?
Social studies

Michael Phelps

Tyler Barritt, First Place, Boys 7-8

How long have you been racing triathlons?
2 years

What is your favorite part of racing?
Crossing the finish line – it makes me feel like I can do anything!

Which race in the series was your favorite?
Tarheel Youth Triathlon #3 in Cary, NC. I finished 1st in my age group and 4th overall for boys. My family and cousins were all there to cheer me on.

What other sports do you play?
Swimming, Running, Basketball, and Chess

What is your favorite subject in school?
Math

Who is your favorite sports hero?
A tie between Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan
