COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced it will host the first-ever National Athlete Recovery Day on Oct. 12, the would-be day after the canceled 2020 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The new annual event, which encourages athletes to focus on the importance of rest and recovery, will take place annually the day after IRONMAN Kona.
“As we approach the end of the most unusual multisport season we’ve ever seen, we could all use a dedicated day to rest and recover — both physically and mentally,” said Rocky Harris, USA Triathlon CEO. “This year has presented unprecedented challenges for the multisport community, and National Athlete Recovery Day is meant to serve as a reminder that in order to keep thriving, we need to take care of our bodies and minds. We are grateful for the support of the USA Triathlon partner family and our certified coaches in this initiative, and we look forward to sharing the many ways athletes can better incorporate recovery into their daily lives.”
National Athlete Recovery Day encourages triathletes nationwide to take recovery as seriously as their training — not only after a season-culminating race, but as a key element of their overall training cycle. USA Triathlon will share recovery-focused digital, video and editorial content with support from certified coaches and recovery-focused corporate partners throughout the day on usatriathlon.org and the USA Triathlon Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, TikTok and Strava channels.
The one-day digital and social campaign is supported by Pure Spectrum CBD, a USA Triathlon partner that produces industry-leading CBD (cannabidiol) products designed to reduce pain and inflammation and improve sleep quality for athletes.
“Rest and recovery are two of the most often over-looked aspects of an athlete’s training routine,” said Brady Bell, CEO and Founder of Pure Spectrum. “During a time when we've all been faced with additional stressors in our lives, I can't think of a better time to focus on recovery. As a proud partner of USA Triathlon and the first CBD company to ever partner with a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic National Governing Body, we view it as our responsibility to connect as many athletes as we can to the recovery powers of the hemp plant.”
As part of National Athlete Recovery Day, Pure Spectrum is offering USA Triathlon annual members 40 percent off its product line at purespectrumcbd.com. USA Triathlon members will receive an email with a one-time-use discount code, valid through Dec. 31.
In addition, Pure Spectrum is launching a new sponsorship program at the local level for USA Triathlon-Certified Coaches, Race Directors and Clubs. Coaches, race directors and club leaders will receive a dedicated email about this opportunity, but may also reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
CBD is a non-psychoactive substance found naturally in the cannabis plant. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) allow the use of CBD both in and out of competition. To be eligible for prizes, athletes are asked to comment on USA Triathlon’s Prize Giveaway social media posts and share their favorite way to recover — whether it’s yoga and meditation, muscle therapy or massage tools, or simply a day spent relaxing on the couch — using the hashtag #AthleteRecoveryDay. Prize winners will be selected randomly and will be notified the following week.
