Nine Americans Up for Election, Re-Election on World Triathlon Committees

By USA Triathlon | Nov. 02, 2020, 4:16 p.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced the nine U.S.-affiliated candidates who are up for election or re-election on the World Triathlon Executive Board and World Triathlon committees at the XXXIII World Triathlon Congress next month. The Congress is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28, and Sunday, Nov. 29, as a virtual event. The Presidents of each World Triathlon National Federation will vote on all positions up for election.

The USA Triathlon Nominating and Governance Committee and USA Triathlon Board of Directors selected the candidates from a competitive field, and the Board voted to approve all nominees. The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee is also supportive of the ticket.

The U.S. candidates have a combined 50 years of experience on World Triathlon committees and a combined 130-plus years of career and volunteer service experience in the multisport industry. The group brings significant international expertise at all levels of the sport, including at all five Olympic Games and one Paralympic Games that have featured triathlon. Six of the nine candidates are women — furthering both USA Triathlon and World Triathlon’s historic commitment to gender equity in the sport as a whole, including in leadership roles.

“USA Triathlon is proud to put forward a strong and diverse group of candidates for election to the World Triathlon Executive Board and Committees, with each nominee bringing extensive sport expertise, effective leadership skills and meaningful international experience that will serve the World Triathlon family well,” said Jacqueline McCook, President of the USA Triathlon Board of Directors. “USA Triathlon looks forward to this opportunity to support our fellow World Triathlon member federations, and work together to expand access and visibility to multisport around the world.”

“Having experienced, qualified and passionate representation at the international level is extremely important to sustaining good governance and growing sport broadly,” said Sarah Hirshland, U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee CEO. "We are happy to support USA Triathlon and this slate of candidates as they look to take on new, or maintain existing, leadership roles at World Triathlon, and work for the benefit of athletes around the world."

New U.S. Candidates for Election:

  • Gabriela Gallegos (El Paso, Texas) – Executive Board
  • Victoria Brumfield (Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Audit Committee
  • John Farra (Heber City, Utah) – National Coaches Committee
  • Christine Palmquist (Geneva, Ill.) – Paratriathlon Committee
  • Deb Wilson (Rutland, Mass.) – Technical Committee

U.S. Incumbents for Re-Election:

  • Gale Bernhardt (Loveland, Colo.) – Legal and Constitution Committee
  • Susan Haag (Jacksonville, Fla.) – Women’s Committee
  • Dr. Doug Hiller (Colfax, Wash.) – Medical & Anti-Doping Committee
  • Tim Yount (Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Multisport Committee

The general platform for the U.S. candidates centers on “Service Through Leadership” — helping to grow the sport around the world, while using the resources afforded to USA Triathlon and the U.S. multisport community to support fellow nations and member federations within World Triathlon.

The U.S. candidates are dedicated to working with World Triathlon and their fellow committee members to maximize and leverage the opportunity of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Los Angeles 2028. The U.S.-hosted Games offer a valuable opportunity to showcase triathlon on a global stage, promote the sport to a wider audience, highlight elite-level talent from around the world and celebrate the sport’s international diversity.

All candidates are also passionate about supporting age-group athletes and multisport fans worldwide, while promoting equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the sport. They are focused on listening to the needs of the global community and the voices of elite and amateur athletes, federations, and partners.

Headlining the U.S. candidates is Gabriela Gallegos (El Paso, Texas), who is running for a position on the World Triathlon Executive Board. Gallegos was elected to the USA Triathlon Board of Directors in 2018 as its first Latina member. She is the President and Race Director for Race El Paso, as well as an attorney and Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health, El Paso campus.

Gallegos is a USA Triathlon Certified Race Director who founded Race El Paso in late 2009 to develop a culture of health and active living in El Paso. She directs six annual running and multisport events, including the all-female Mighty Mujer Triathlon, which has expanded into a series with races in El Paso, Tucson, Miami and Austin. Mighty Mujer Triathlon El Paso is televised live on El Paso’s NBC affiliate station, and it has introduced thousands of women to their first triathlon.

In addition to the USA Triathlon Board, Gallegos is also on the Board of Directors for the Pan American Triathlon Confederation and YWCA El Paso del Norte. She is passionate about increasing diversity in the sport of triathlon and is a founding member of the USA Triathlon Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access Advisory Council.
