CLERMONT, Fla. — Renée Tomlin and William Huffman led the way for the United States on Saturday at the Clermont PATCO Sprint Triathlon Panamerican Cup, joined by American podium finishers Kaitlin Donner, Tommy Zaferes and Austin Hindman in the early-season international event, which has been held at Lake Louisa State Park every March since 2010.

Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J.) raced to a win on the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run course in 59 minutes, 2 seconds, having been at the front of the pack from start to finish. This was Tomlin’s third win of the 2020 season, following victories at PATCO Sprint Triathlon Panamerican Cup events in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, and Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. After covering the entire race course with Canadian Dominika Jamnicky, Tomlin had the advantage at the finish to edge out Jamnicky for the top podium spot by a two-second margin. Jamnicky, who finished fourth at the Habana PATCO Panamerican Cup last month, clocked in at 59:04 for the silver medal spot.

Kaitlin Donner (Satellite Beach, Fla.), who was making her return to the ITU circuit after a hiatus that began in October 2017 and included the birth of her son in April 2019, rounded out the women’s podium with a time of 59:08. Donner was propelled to the podium thanks to a race best 5k split of 16:30 - nearly 30 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Four other American women also finished in the top 10: Bria Edwards (Boulder, Colo., sixth, 59:48), Annie Kelly (Boulder, Colo., seventh, 59:56), Molly Elliott (Boise, Idaho, eighth, 1:00:03), Sonja Catano (Hudson, Mass., 10th, 1:00:04).

Huffman (Colleyville, Texas) captured the win in the men’s race with a time of 51:26 after finishing eighth on the same course in 2019. It is his first ITU Continental Cup win since November 2018. Huffman came out of the water with Zaferes, the eventual runner-up, and the pair maintained a front-pack position through the finish. Zaferes lost contact with Huffman on the run, finishing in 51:43 in his first ITU event since June 2019. Austin Hindman (Wildwood, Mo.), an ITU Junior World Champion in 2016, finished third in 51:57, tying his best individual senior level result.

Other American men finishing in the top 10 were Jason West (Boulder, Colo., fourth, 52:06), Chase McQueen (Columbus, Ind., seventh, 52:25) and Clayton Hutchins (Asheville, N.C., eighth, 52:27).

The racing action in Clermont also included an age-group competition, a youth draft-legal race and a USA Triathlon U-25 Elite Development Race. Complete results for all events will be published at draftlegalchallenge.com

International triathlon action continues in Sarasota, Florida next weekend with the Sarasota-Bradenton PATCO Sprint Triathlon Panamerican Cup, Junior North American Championships, and Paratriathlon Panamerican Championships. For more information about the races in Sarasota, click here.
