COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced that the age-group sprint-distance race at the inaugural Legacy Triathlon, set for Saturday, July 20 in Long Beach, California, has officially sold out. Unregistered participants may purchase a charitable entry through the USA Triathlon Foundation; join the waitlist; compete in the relay division; or enter the Legacy open water swim competition taking place on Friday, July 19.

The Legacy Triathlon is a new annual event hosted by USA Triathlon and will take place at Alamitos Beach — the proposed site of the triathlon competitions for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. USA Triathlon is the first National Governing Body in the U.S. Olympic family to bring a new annual event to the Los Angeles footprint ahead of the 2028 Games, giving participants the chance to be a part of Southern California’s rich Olympic history.

The age-group race at the Legacy Triathlon features a 750-meter swim, non-drafting 18.9-kilometer bike and 5.1-kilometer run. The inaugural race is being capped at just over 750 participants; however, the field size will increase for the 2020 event.

“Triathletes across the country are eager to be a part of history by racing in the first-ever Legacy Triathlon, setting the stage for a 10-year event that will grow as we approach the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Brian D’Amico, Events Director at USA Triathlon. “We look forward to hosting a memorable race this July, and we are committed to offering waitlisted athletes who do not get added to the 2019 field, the first opportunity to register for the 2020 Legacy Triathlon.” 

The USA Triathlon Foundation is offering 50 charitable entries into the Legacy Triathlon, which is the only remaining option to guarantee entry into the sold-out event. Entries are available for the standard race registration fee of $129, plus an additional $100 donation to the USA Triathlon Foundation. 

All donations will support local multisport community initiatives in the Long Beach and Los Angeles areas as part of a larger USA Triathlon Foundation giveback program in conjunction with the event.

Registration is open now for the Foundation charitable entries, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. 

There is no fee to join the waitlist for the Legacy Triathlon age-group race. Waitlisted individuals are not registered until they receive confirmation directly from USA Triathlon. In order to open up additional race spots, USA Triathlon is offering a 50 percent refund on registration costs for anyone currently signed up for the Legacy Triathlon age-group race who is no longer able to participate. Those athletes are encouraged to email registration@usatriathlon.org with their intent to cancel.

Registration is still open for a limited number of relay teams. In the relay division, teams are made up of three athletes, with each one completing a single leg of the race. The relay division will be capped at 15 teams.

Spots are still available for the open water swim competition, hosted by USA Triathlon in partnership with U.S. Masters Swimming and USA Swimming. The open water swim is set for Friday at 6 p.m. Both 750m and 1,500m distance options are available, and no qualification is required in order to compete. 

In addition to the age-group race and open water swim, Legacy Triathlon weekend will also include a Splash & Dash youth aquathlon (for ages 7-15) on Friday and the Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships on Saturday. Registration for both events is still open; qualification is required for the Paratriathlon National Championships.

Spots also remain for the Legacy Triathlon Physically Challenged (PC) Open division, for those athletes who do not meet qualification or eligibility requirements for the Paratriathlon National Championships.
