GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Seventeen age-group triathletes earned national titles on Sunday at the USA Triathlon Clydesdale & Athena National Championships, held in conjunction with the Grand Rapids Triathlon in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

More than 160 of the best amateur Clydesdale and Athena triathletes in the nation competed in three distances: a sprint-distance 600-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run; an Olympic-distance 1,500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run; and a long-course 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run.

Josh De Jong (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the first finisher in the sprint race, crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 53 seconds to win both the overall Clydesdale title and the 39-and-under age group. Laura Crower (Sanford, Mich.) won the overall Athena sprint-distance championship in 1:16:46, and defended her 39-and-under title for the second time.

In the Olympic-distance race, Alyssa Hinds (Mason, Mich.) took the overall Athena title in 2:48:51 and won the 39-and-under age group for the second year in a row. Bill Tomlinson (Boston, Mass.) was overall Clydesdale champion, grabbing the 39-and-under title in the process in 2:24:38.

Rhoda Miel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) defended her 55+ age group title with a time of 3:14:05.

The long-course race saw Christian Jacobsen (Oxford, Mich.) win the overall Clydesdale title in 4:53:19, also claiming the 40-59 age group for the third consecutive year. Kristi Mauss (Royal Oak, Mich.) was the overall Athena champion, also winning the 39-and-under age group in 5:19:51.

Leslie Battle (Warwick, R.I.) defended her 40-54 age group title in 5:45:45. Battle, who won the overall Athena Olympic-distance race for five straight years from 2012-16 and also won the sprint in 2014, competed in the long-course championship for the first time last year.

In the 60+ age group, the winner was Howard Palay (Waynesville, S.C.) with a time of 7:47:39. Palay previously competed in the sprint distance and won the 60+ age group in that division last year.

Clydesdale & Athena Nationals have been held as a standalone event on USA Triathlon’s National Championship calendar since 2014. The Clydesdale and Athena competitive divisions are based on weight minimums outlined in the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules. Athletes competing in the Clydesdale division must be a minimum of 220 pounds, and athletes in the Athena division must be a minimum of 165 pounds.
