COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The annual USA Triathlon Race Director Symposium presented by ACTIVE Network, which features educational sessions and networking opportunities, hosted multisport event organizers from across the country in Dallas on Jan. 20-22.
Held at the Fairmont Dallas Hotel, the three-day conference covered topics to help race directors grow and future-proof their businesses. Featured presenters included motivational speaker and coach Terri Schneider, Paralympian and veteran Melissa Stockwell and Team in Training Senior Vice President Bob Merrill.
“My favorite part was getting some new ideas: learning a lot more about safety, fundraising and how to approach sponsors,” said first-time attendee Joella Baker of Pittsburgh.
The weekend’s lineup included sessions on transforming triathlon and galvanizing women’s participation, tricks to creating and sustaining loyal volunteerism and insights from presenting partner ACTIVE Network.
Attendees also took part in the annual fun run, welcome reception and Tri Tank, based on the popular “Shark Tank” reality TV show. USA Triathlon called on all race director entrepreneurs to pitch their innovative event ideas in hopes of winning an investment opportunity for their organization or event. The three finalists, Christina Reddick, Mark Walter and Ann Vidro, presented their ideas in front of a panel of esteemed triathlon community colleagues on Jan. 21.
“I really like adding a competitive edge to the Symposium and being involved in the process of the conference,” said Reddick, assistant director of aquatics at Florida International University and winner of the 2017 Tri Tank. She partnered with Campus Life at her university to add a triathlon to the welcome week lineup and now wants to take this innovative concept to other venues.
“We had all these students who didn’t know what a triathlon was come out and have this great experience and a three-hour workout. We had students who played basketball their whole life and said, ‘this is literally the hardest thing physically I’ve ever done,’” said Reddick, who won $2,000 to support this initiative.
The Symposium was also hosted in collaboration with Triathlon Business International’s seventh Annual Business Conference, which runs through Jan. 24. USA Triathlon CEO Rob Urbach and TBI Interim President Richard Adler presented a joint welcome session on Sunday to kick off TBI’s conference, which focuses on profitability and success in triathlon.
