USA Triathlon Announces Organizational Restructuring

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris today announced an organizational restructuring, including a new internal reporting model and consolidation of the previous nine business units. Effective immediately, the number of departments that report directly to Harris, who started with USA Triathlon on September 6, is reduced from nine to four, and includes: Sport Development, National Office, Marketing & Communications, and High Performance. 

“The primary rationale for an organizational restructure was to realize greater efficiencies and increase teamwork among our staff, especially in those areas of our business where we see the most opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration,” said Harris. “By consolidating into four teams, we will be more successful in our day-to-day work while allowing senior staff to place added focus on our mission of growing the sport in the U.S. and executing our Strategic Plan as outlined by the Board of Directors.”

“The Board’s support of a reorganization is a strong vote of confidence for the national office staff of USA Triathlon,” said Barry Siff, President of the USA Triathlon Board of Directors. “The streamlining of our business units will allow for more effective communication throughout the federation, while the addition of key roles will transform the way we engage with, and support, all of our members – race directors, coaches, age-group athletes, elites and officials.” 

The Sport Development business unit will maintain its current oversight of programs for clubs, coaching, youth, high school, collegiate club and NCAA, but will now also include Membership Services and Events, which was formed by merging National Events and Event Services. Within Sport Development, the Events team will manage host city selection and execution of USA Triathlon’s National Championships calendar, as well as event sanctioning, race director certification and Regions. The efficiencies created by merging the Events team has made it possible for the Director of Event Services position to not be filled moving forward. USA Triathlon recently reduced the number of its Regions – volunteer-driven bodies that promote and support multisport at the grassroots level – from 10 to six. Tim Yount, USA Triathlon Chief Operating Officer, will oversee the Sport Development business unit and continue to report directly to Harris.

The National Office business unit, which has historically included human resources and finance, will now welcome the addition of Information Technology (IT). A newly created Chief of Staff position will oversee this team and serve as a direct report to Harris. The Chief of Staff’s primary role will be to operationalize USA Triathlon’s Strategic Plan across the entire organization. 

Marketing & Communications will retain its existing structure, but will add a Senior Manager of Business Development who will be responsible for revenue generation through sponsorship and advertising sales, while a Social Media Coordinator will execute the organization’s social media strategy. The Acquisition & Retention Coordinator position, which had been open, will not be filled moving forward. Chuck Menke, USA Triathlon Chief Marketing Officer, will continue to report directly to Harris.

The structure of the High Performance business unit, which includes talent identification, athlete development, U.S. Olympic and Paralympic programs, and anti-doping, will remain intact. USA Triathlon High Performance General Manager Andy Schmitz will continue to report directly to Harris. 

The USA Triathlon Board of Directors also voted to hire an Executive Director of the USA Triathlon Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as the charitable fundraising arm of USA Triathlon. The Executive Director will simultaneously report to the President of the Foundation and serve as a member of Harris’ senior staff, tasked with transforming the level of philanthropic support afforded to youth, paratriathletes and U.S. Olympic hopefuls. 

Any new positions will be based out of USA Triathlon headquarters in Colorado Springs, and will be posted to usatriathlon.org and Teamwork Online, among other online job boards, within the next week.
