New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup

U.S. triathletes raced at the New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup on Sunday, battling rainy and cold conditions over the sprint-distance course. U.S. Olympian Katie Zaferes (Hampstead, Md.), who was also the 2014 race champion, took the victory in a finishing time of 59 minutes, 28 seconds.

In the men's race, Matt McElroy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) placed second for his third career World Cup podium. With a time of 54:43, McElroy was just six seconds back from three-peat winner Richard Murray of South Africa. It was a great showing for Team USA as a whole, with five U.S. women and two U.S. men in the top-10.

While in New Zealand, U.S. athletes visited local elementary schools to share their experiences with the students, answer questions and sign autographs.

Happy to get a podium on my bday! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ Trying to find 70.3 race pace was a bit painful, but excited to get the 2017 party started. Up next is double the fun with Ironman Texas in 3 weeks!
