Patricia Collins’ first triathlon memory was the Julie Moss crawl at the 1982 IRONMAN in Hawaii. She completed her own first triathlon in 1989 and never really stopped. Collins has always considered herself an athlete, and she remembers watching Dorothy Hamill and Nadia Comaneci in 1976. “I never imagined I would be in their position,” Collins said. A 2006 cycling outing led to the loss of the lower part of her left leg when she was hit by a car. She made the decision to amputate in 2007, calling it one of her biggest challenges. Even after her accident, Collins remained a dedicated member of the U.S. Army and worked at the Pentagon and Fort Bragg as part of her 25-year career, which she retired from last year as a Colonel. Now she spends time with her 9-year-old son Gabe, who she adopted from Guatemala. She says Gabe is her biggest motivation, and wants him to see her follow a dream and know he can too. In addition to the inspiration she draws from her son, ‘my bag of gold is so heavy’ is a phrase that resonates with Collins. “Sometimes I need to remind myself just how great my life really is,” she said. “I have my health, my family, and I get to chase my athletic dreams further than I ever imagined.”
