The race will start with a 1000-meter open water swim and finish with a 5k run along the Bolsa Chica State Beach bike path.
“We’re honored and excited to be hosting the 2008 USAT Aquathlon Nationals,” said USAT Certified Race Director Brennan Lindner. “Huntington Beach is a beautiful course and centrally located, so we expect some fierce competition.”
As part of the Playa del Run Aquathlon Series, the USAT Aquathlon Nationals is a qualifying event for the ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico on June 28, 2008.
“USAT is excited for Aquathlon Nationals to be headed to Southern California,” said USAT National Events Director Jeff Dyrek. “Playa del Run is a great event and has supported aquathlon over the years, we hope last year’s momentum will carry over to this year’s National and World Championship team.”
Any former Team USA Aquathlon member is pre-qualified to compete in the World Championship race. Additionally, any athlete who finishes among the top three per age group per gender at any USAT sanctioned aquathlon or any athlete who finishes among the top six per age group per gender at the Nationals event in Huntington Beach will be allowed to compete at the World Championships, as well.
To the extent that World Championship slots are still available, athletes may also submit a 5-kilometer run time and a 1000-meter swim or one mile swim to the Aquathlon Committee for consideration.
