Long Course Duathlon National Championships

The 2017 USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championships will take place April 29 as part of the Cary Du Classic in Cary, North Carolina at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The complex, home of USA Baseball, is located on Green Hope School Road.

The long course run will be 2.5 miles out and back with small rolling hills through the park and local communities.  The second segment of the run will mirror the first run with water station right outside the transition area, water station at 1.25 mile mark and last water station at 2.5 mile long course run turnaround.  The bike course will ride along many familiar roads to local cyclists including a favorite “Big Woods Road”.  The ride will feature fast, flat, rolling and climbing sections and multiple views of Lake Jordan.

The race course revolves around a transition area located within NTC . The same transition area will be used for all phases. The transition area will open at 5:30am; ALL bikes need to be placed in position before the transition area closes at 6:45am.

Eligible Age Groups and Awards

Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championship through the 2017 USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championship. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. Age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 80-84. The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 75). 

  • For the 2017 USAT Long Course Duathlon National Championship, athletes must be 17 by December 31st, 2017.
  • For the 2018 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championship, athletes must be 18 by December 31st, 2018.

Please note that this event may have additional categories other than what is listed here. USA Triathlon will only provide National Championship awards for the listed age groups. If you are wishing to compete at this event, but do not meet the minimum age requirement, we encourage you to participate in one of our youth events. Note: this event may allow athletes under 17 to participate. In coordination with ITU rules, they will not be eligible for USA Triathlon National Championship awards.


The 2017 USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championships in Cary, North Carolina, will qualify athletes for the 2018 Long Course Duathlon World Championship in Zofingen, Switzerland. At the Long Course Duathlon National Championships, the top 18 in each age group, rolling down to 25th place after applying the age-up rule, will qualify for the World Championship.

The top 20 duathletes per age group in the USA Triathlon Duathlon annual rankings as of 12/31 will qualify for the World Championship in Zofingen, Switzerland. The top two are offered a spot rolling down to 20th.

Note: All spots offered via the rankings system are subject to spots being available on the roster.

Correction - 3/16/2017: A promotional email was sent to some USA Triathlon members on 3/15/2017 stating the incorrect location for the 2018 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships. The correct location for the 2018 World Championships is Zofingen, Switzerland as noted above. USA Triathlon apologizes for this error.
