Back To Tuscaloosa!

USA Triathlon is heading to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, as the host city for the 2021 USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships. The city, a longtime host of USA Triathlon National Championship events and other premier triathlon competitions, will welcome the nation’s best run-bike-run athletes as they compete for national titles in three events. Tuscaloosa served as the host of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for triathlon, the 2009-10 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships and the 2007-08, 2011-12 and 2017-18 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships.

The bike and run courses will take athletes on the Tuscaloosa River Walk along the Black Warrior River, before traversing Jack Warner Parkway and returning to the amphitheater for the finish. Specific race distances and course information will be shared when available.

Race weekend will feature national championships in the non-drafting standard distance, non-drafting sprint, and draft-legal sprint. Top age-group finishers in each race will earn the opportunity to represent USA Triathlon’s amateur Team USA at the 2021 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Almere, Netherlands AND the 2022 Championships in Townsville, Australia. Pre-Event Information and Rules Briefing

The pre-event information and rules briefing is now posted here to view on demand. This hour-long presentation from the race director, head officials, and others reviews all critical event information, Team USA qualification, and rules overviews for both non-drafting and draft-legal races. There will NOT be an in-person rules briefing during race week.

Draft-Legal Rules

For athletes participating in the Draft-Legal National Championship, be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules, which have several differences from non-draft racing. Draft-legal rules and best practices can be found on this page

*Please note that aerobars are not permitted in the draft-legal race

Coronavirus Safety Precautions

Please know that the health and safety of all athletes, staff, volunteers and the community at large is USA Triathlon’s highest priority. We are dedicated to providing a safe environment at all USA Triathlon events, and our race logistics and safety plans for 2021 are specifically designed to prevent COVID-19 exposure and transmission. The Duathlon National Championships will be held with stringent COVID-19 safety precautions in place according to USA Triathlon’s Safe Return to Multisport initiative. USA Triathlon has released this detailed COVID-19 mitigation plan for the Duathlon National Championships. Participants should expect the following safety measures to be in place:

  • Self-screening before arrival at venue
  • Masks worn by all individuals at all times except when actively racing
  • Temperature checks upon arrival to venue
  • Contact reduction for all athletes, staff and volunteers
  • Advanced selection of packet pickup time required (click here)
  • Pre-race briefings held virtually instead of in-person
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting practices onsite, including hand sanitizer stations throughout venue
  • Increased spacing between athletes in transition area and run start
  • Smaller wave sizes
  • Bottled water at aid stations
  • Limited aid stations — athletes encouraged to race with their own nutrition
  • Post-race food will be prepackaged in a to-go format
  • Signage throughout venue reminding athletes to wear masks and remain 6 feet apart whenever possible

These practices are subject to change based on the evolving COVID-19 situation and any restrictions put in place by the host city, county and venue itself. Click here to view the detailed COVID-19 mitigation plan for Duathlon Nationals.

Non-compliance with this event's required safety measures will result in disqualification without refund and removal from the race venue. USA Triathlon thanks you for your compliance and willingness to contribute to the safety of our community.
