COVID-19 Update: Toyota Age Group National Championships Canceled

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve, we are writing to provide an update regarding the 2020 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships, which were scheduled for Aug. 8-9 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Please know that the health, safety and well-being of you and the sport’s entire community is our highest priority.

The City of Milwaukee has informed us that it is unable to guarantee a permit for our event due to ongoing state and local restrictions on gatherings. Unfortunately, we have been forced to officially cancel the 2020 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships and Open Water Swim Competition. Unfortunately, postponement to a later date in 2020 is not a viable option based on permitting and venue availability.

Canceling events is never an easy decision to make, and we know this news is extremely disappointing to many of you. Please know that this cancelation was made with the safety of the entire community in mind, including Milwaukee’s most vulnerable populations.

Because these are unprecedented circumstances, USA Triathlon is temporarily adjusting our policy to allow athletes to defer their registration to future events, with no requirement to re-qualify.

With a deadline of September 16, athletes who were registered for the Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships or Open Water Swim Competition may elect to transfer the value of their registration to one of the following USA Triathlon-owned events (age minimums apply):

  • 2021 or 2022 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships (no need to re-qualify) or Open Water Swim Competition
  • 2021 or 2022 Legacy Triathlon or Open Water Swim Competition
  • 2021 or 2022 Duathlon National Championships
  • 2021 or 2022 Collegiate Club National Championships (if eligible according to the Collegiate Competitive Rules)

The Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships will return to Milwaukee, Wisconsin the next two years, including Aug. 7-8, 2021 and Aug. 6-7, 2022.

For more information about each of these events, including their dates and locations for 2021, visit Dates and locations for most 2022 events are still to be determined.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding during this unprecedented time, and we hope to see you at another starting line soon!

Qualification for 2021

We are not taking new registrations for 2021 at this time.Qualified athletes will receive a new link to register later this fall.

Note on fees:

There are NO fees to transfer your registration to 2021 or 2022. However, some users may encounter additional charges for the following reasons:

  • If you are transferring to a different distance event (for instance, sprint to Olympic-distance), you will be required to pay the price difference. There are no refunds for transferring to a shorter distance event (Olympic-distance to sprint).
  • If you encounter fees other than what is noted here, please email and we will identify why you are being charged this or rectify it if the charge is an error.

It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. For Standard-Distance (Olympic), age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 85-89. For Sprint, age groups will begin with 15-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 85-89 The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 75).

  • For the 2020 USAT Olympic-Distance National Championship, athletes must be 17 by December 31st, 2020.
  • For the 2020 USAT Sprint National Championship, athletes must be 15 by December 31st, 2020.

Event Cancellation and Modification Policy

In the event of extreme weather, natural disaster, community disaster or other unforeseen emergencies, our action steps will be as follows:

  • USA Triathlon, in concert with local officials, will make the final decision based on safety of the athletes, spectators, vendors, volunteers and others affiliated with the event.
  • USAT may, based on the conditions of the course, shorten the distances or cancel the event altogether.
  • Because costs of the event have already been paid out to cover various levels of production expenses, there will be NO REFUNDS, transferred entry fees or future complimentary entry fees.

Athenas and Clydesdales

Since ITU does not support a division for Athena and Clydesdale at its Sprint and Olympic-Distance World Championships, USA Triathlon does not provide an Athena and Clydesdale division at the Age Group National Championships. If the athlete’s intent is to qualify for either the Sprint or Olympic-Distance World Championships, they will need to compete in the wave corresponding with their age group at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. To qualify for the Age Group National Championships, all athletes will need to meet qualification in their respective age group at a sanctioned event when qualifying.

USA Triathlon continues to support the Clydesdale and Athena National Championships as a standalone event in the sprint and Olympic distances. Additionally, USA Triathlon supports Cyldesdale and Athena divisions at Duathlon Nationals and the Multisport National Championships Festival.
