*USA Triathlon reserves the right to modify race maximum numbers*

Athletes are allowed to race in both the Olympic-Distance and Sprint National Championships; however, due to ITU rules, athletes who qualify for Worlds CANNOT compete in both the Sprint and Olympic World Championships.

To be eligible for awards you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a U.S. national - someone who has resided in the U.S. for three years.

Club National Championships

Club participation will be recognized at the 2017 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships.  Encourage all club members to attend the event and race in their qualified Olympic race and/or the sprint distance race. There will be a designated area by transition for all clubs to set up their tents and club areas.

All USA Triathlon registered clubs are eligible. Be sure to select your club from the drop down list during registration as athletes will not be permitted to add in their club designation once they have completed the registration process. If you do not see your cub in the drop down list, please contact clubs@usatriathlon.org

Eligible Age Groups and Awards

Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships through the 2017 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. For Sprint, age groups will begin with 15-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 85-89. The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 75).

  • For the 2017 USAT Age Group Sprint National Championship, athletes must be 15 by December 31st, 2017.
  • For the 2018 ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championship, athletes must be 16 by December 31st, 2018.

If you are wishing to compete at this event, but do not meet the minimum age requirement, we encourage you to participate in one of our youth events. For a chart of recommended distances for youth multisport athletes, please click here.

Event Cancellation and Modification Policy

In the event of extreme weather, natural disaster, community disaster or other unforeseen emergencies, our action steps will be as follows:
  • USA Triathlon, in concert with local officials, will make the final decision based on safety of the athletes, spectators, vendors, volunteers and others affiliated with the event.
  • USA Triathlon may, based on the conditions of the course, shorten the distances or cancel the event altogether.
  • Because costs of the event have already been paid out to cover various levels of production expenses, there will be NO REFUNDS, transferred entry fees or future complimentary entry fees.

Athenas and Clydesdales

Since ITU does not support a division for Athena and Clydesdale at its Sprint and Olympic-Distance World Championships, USA Triathlon will not be supporting an Athena and Clydesdale division moving forward at the Age Group National Championships. If the athlete’s intent is to qualify for either the Sprint or Olympic-Distance World Championships, they will need to compete in the wave corresponding with their age group at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. Again, since the Age Group National Championships will no longer support the Clydesdale and Athena division, all athletes will need to meet qualification in the athlete’s respective age group at a sanctioned event when qualifying.
