Eligible Age Groups and Awards

Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 ITU Triathlon World Championships through the 2016 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. For Standard-Distance, age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 85-89. The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 75).

  • For the 2016 USAT Olympic-Distance National Championship, athletes must be 17 by December 31st, 2016.
  • For the 2017 ITU Olympic-Distance World Championship, athletes must be 18 by December 31st, 2017.

If you are wishing to compete at this event, but do not meet the minimum age requirement, we encourage you to participate in one of our youth events. For a chart of recommended distances for youth multisport athletes, please click here.

Event Cancellation and Modification Policy

In the event of extreme weather, natural disaster, community disaster or other unforeseen emergencies, our action steps will be as follows:
  • USA Triathlon, in concert with local officials, will make the final decision based on safety of the athletes, spectators, vendors, volunteers and others affiliated with the event.
  • USA Triathlon may, based on the conditions of the course, shorten the distances or cancel the event altogether.
  • Because costs of the event have already been paid out to cover various levels of production expenses, there will be NO REFUNDS, transferred entry fees or future complimentary entry fees.

Athenas and Clydesdales

Since ITU does not support a division for Athena and Clydesdale at its Sprint and Olympic-Distance World Championships, USA Triathlon will not be supporting an Athena and Clydesdale division moving forward at the Age Group National Championships. If the athlete’s intent is to qualify for either the Sprint or Olympic-Distance World Championships, they will need to compete in the wave corresponding with their age group at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. Again, since the Age Group National Championships will no longer support the Clydesdale and Athena division, all athletes will need to meet qualification in the athlete’s respective age group at a sanctioned event when qualifying.
