Now, here’s what you need to know about Legacy!

Open Water Swim

The open water swims are back this year! We will host both a 750-meter and 1500-meter race. The 1500-meter distance will start first, with the 750-meter distance starting a short time thereafter. A few highlights to enhance your experience include:

  • A start time of 6:45 p.m., allowing you time to get to Alamitos Beach

  • 1500-meter swimmers will swim the 750-meter course twice. Once participants complete the first lap, they will be directed back to swim start to complete their second lap.

  • Bundle your triathlon registration with the Open Water Swim registrations and receive a reduced price for the Open Water Swim

  • Each swimmer will receive a swim cap, chip timed event, t-shirt and be eligible for awards.

  • Register for the Open Water Swim here.

USA Team Beach Handball Exhibition

Come and enjoy one of the hottest rising sports in the U.S. —  beach handball. Friday night at 5:15 at Alamitos Beach, the U.S. team will be on hand to play an opponent yet to be announced. This is a great way to see up close some of the finest all-around athletes in the U.S. and take in just one of the exciting ancillary events that will be happening on Friday night before race day.

USA Triathlon Foundation Giving Back!

In addition to the open water swim competition, packet pick-up and the beach handball exhibition, the USA Triathlon Foundation will be hosting the second annual Legacy Youth Splash and Dash. The event will be moved to the Legacy Race venue at Alamitos Beach and youth from the Long Beach and LA area will compete in a USA Triathlon sponsored Splash and Dash. Participants will swim 150 meters in the open water and run 2 kilometers and finish in the Legacy Triathlon finish chute.

This will be the culmination of the efforts many of the young athletes who have put in a great deal of time preparing for this event with USA Triathlon Certified Coach Diego Olivieri. Diego leads our Legacy community outreach program to encourage the underserved youth in the area to participate in triathlon. USAT is building on the program started in 2019 to offer youth in the area free coaching, equipment and entrance into the Legacy Youth Splash and Dash. Diego has a motivated group of athletes this year working hard to build the triathletes of the future. Friday night at Alamitos Beach will be hopping! Will you be there?

Olympian Project

Come race with an Olympian!

Another USA Triathlon Foundation driven project will pair one Olympian or Paralympian with two age group triathletes to participate in the Legacy Triathlon as a relay team. Triathletes will contribute a designated donation to the USA Triathlon Foundation, and this donation will pair these triathletes with an Olympian to race in a special relay division. Donors will receive a custom USA Triathlon/Legacy Triathlon kit, a private dinner with all the Olympians participating at the Reef Restaurant Friday night before the event, VIP transition area and much more.

More information to come on this great opportunity to create your legacy with some of the nation’s finest athletes. Proceeds from this project will go to the USA Triathlon Foundation to support the Legacy community outreach.

PATCO Elite Race

As many of you know Long Beach will be the site for the 2028 Olympic Games Triathlon.  To gear up for 2028 the Legacy Triathlon will be host to elite racing events leading up to the games. This year USA Triathlon will host a Pan American Triathlon Confederation (PATCO) elite draft legal race Sunday, July 19. This event will consist of 75 male and 75 female athletes racing with a sprint distance of 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run being contested on a very exciting and fast course in and around Long Beach. Come out Sunday and see some of the future elite triathletes from North and South America. Stay tuned for more details!!

The excitement is building for the 2020 event!  There is so much more in store for this year’s event.  Whether you are racing, volunteering or just spectating, your involvement makes this event happen and we hope to see you in July.

Until next time, keep tri-ing!

Brad
