Legacy Triathlon Canceled and Paratriathlon Nationals Postponed

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve, we are writing to provide an update regarding the 2020 Legacy Triathlon, Open Water Swim Competition, and Paratriathlon National Championships, which were scheduled for July 17-19 in Long Beach, California. Please know that the health, safety and well-being of you and the sport’s entire community is our highest priority.

The City of Long Beach has informed us that it is unable to guarantee a permit for our event due to ongoing state and local restrictions on gatherings. Unfortunately, we have been forced to cancel the 2020 Legacy Triathlon and Open Water Swim Competition. Postponement to a later date in 2020 is not a viable option based on permitting and venue availability.

Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships

The rescheduled 2020 Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, as part of the Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Triathlon hosted by Smooth Running. The championship was originally scheduled to take place as part of the Legacy Triathlon in Long Beach, California, on July 18, but the event was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

NOTE: The rescheduled Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships are contingent upon the City of Cocoa Beach continuing to allow large-scale events by the rescheduled race date of Sept. 20.

Athletes wishing to compete at the 2020 Toyota USA Paratriathlon Nationals must be officially classified in a paratriathlon sport class and must meet the amended qualification standards, which were published on June 11 and can be found at usatriathlon.org. Individuals who are not classified or who do not meet the qualification standards may choose to race in the PC Open Division, which does not require qualification. Registration is currently open here. A National Classification opportunity will be offered in Cocoa Beach prior to the event.

In addition to chasing national titles, athletes competing at the 2020 Toyota USA Triathlon Paratriathlon Nationals also have the opportunity to qualify for the USA Paratriathlon Development Team Program, designed to identify and develop athletic potential leading into the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. More information on the USA Paratriathlon Development Team Program is available by clicking here.

Canceling events is never an easy decision to make, and we know this news is disappointing to many of you. Please know that this cancelation was made with the safety of the entire community in mind, including Long Beach’s most vulnerable populations.

Because these are unprecedented circumstances, USA Triathlon is temporarily adjusting our policy to allow athletes to defer their registration to future events:

With a deadline of Sept. 11, athletes who were registered for the 2020 Legacy Triathlon or Open Water Swim Competition may elect to transfer the value of their registration to one of the following USA Triathlon-owned events:

  • The 2021 or 2022 Legacy Triathlon or Open Water Swim Competition (July 16-18, 2021, TBA 2022)
  • The 2021 or 2022 Duathlon National Championships, Tuscaloosa, AL (May 22-23, 2021, TBA 2022)
  • The 2021 or 2022 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships (qualification required) or Open Water Swim Competition, Milwaukee, WI (Aug. 7-8, 2021, TBA 2022)
  • The 2021 or 2022 Collegiate Club National Championships (if eligible according to the Collegiate Competitive Rules) (location TBA - April 2021 and 2022)

If you take no action, your registration will be automatically transferred on Sept. 9 to the rescheduled 2021 Legacy Triathlon and you will receive a confirmation email. We encourage you to proactively transfer your registration by clicking on your VIP link you received via email. There is no benefit to this other than peace of mind, but we wanted to give you the option in case you already know your decision.

How to Defer to 2021 or 2022 Events

Currently registered participants can follow the below steps to defer to a different event after logging into myevents.active.com.  Athletes will have until Sept. 9 to defer their registration.
  1. Locate your current registration
  2. Click Change event
  3. Select the New Event You Wish to Defer Into
  4. Select new event and year you would like to defer your registration to
  5. Click CONTINUE
  6. Verify Registration information
  7. Agree to the waiver
  8. Enter Electronic signature
  9. Click CONTINUE
  10. Click COMPLETE

If you have registered for multiple races in the same event, you will need to follow this process for each race (i.e. you registered for the Legacy Triathlon AND open water swim competition). If you do not transfer or defer by Sept. 9, your registration will automatically transfer to the 2021 Legacy Triathlon.

If you have registered for multiple races in the same event, you will need to follow this process for each race (i.e. you registered for Olympic-distance and draft-legal sprint races).

New registrations for 2021 will open later this fall.

Toyota Paratriathlon National Championship

Athletes who were previously registered for the 2020 Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships, originally scheduled to take place as part of the Legacy Triathlon on July 18, have the following options for deferrals and transfers:

  • If you take no action, your registration will be automatically transferred on July 23 to the rescheduled 2020 event in Cocoa Beach in September, and you will receive a confirmation email. We encourage you to proactively transfer your registration before July 23 to the September event by clicking on the VIP registration link you will receive from ACTIVE via email (for complete instructions, see the event website). There is no benefit to this other than peace of mind, but we wanted to give you the option in case you already know your decision.
  • With a deadline of July 23 you may defer your registration to another USA Triathlon-owned event in 2021 or 2022, including the Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championships or the PC Open divisions of the Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships, Duathlon National Championships, Collegiate Club National Championships (pending eligibility) or Legacy Triathlon. Please use the above step-by-step instructions on how to defer your registration to another event.

Athletes who qualify for the Toyota Paratriathlon National Championship qualify for this event. View qualification standards here. If qualification standards are not met, athletes are encouraged to register in the PC Open category.

Event Cancellation and Modification Policy

In the event of extreme weather, natural disaster, community disaster or other unforeseen emergencies, our action steps will be as follows:
  • USA Triathlon, in concert with local officials, will make the final decision based on safety of the athletes, spectators, vendors, volunteers and others affiliated with the event.
  • USA Triathlon may, based on the conditions of the course, shorten the distances or cancel the event altogether.
  • Because costs of the event have already been paid out to cover various levels of production expenses, there will be NO REFUNDS, transferred entry fees or future complimentary entry fees.
