Toyota Para2019 Toyota Paratriathlon National Championships Qualification Procedures 

The qualification procedures will explain how USA paratriathletes can enter to compete in the Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championship Event. Any athlete that wishes to compete in the National Championship division at the 2019 Toyota USA Paratriathlon National Championship must be officially classified and placed in a USA Paratriathlon Category as outlined in USA Triathlon’s Competitive Rules. If an athlete does not classify or does not qualify via the time standards, they may choose to race in the Physically Challenged (PC) Open division.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements for Consideration

  1. Athlete must be eligible under all applicable rules of ITU, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and USA Triathlon.
  2. Athlete must be an annual member in good standing of USA Triathlon.
  3. Paratriathlon Category Classification: Each athlete must be Officially Classified and placed in a USA Paratriathlon Category as outlined in USA Triathlon’s Competitive Rules. USA Paratriathlon categories shall be instituted and maintained as follows:
    1. PTWC - Wheelchair users. Athletes must use a recumbent handcycle on the bike course and a racing wheelchair on the run segment;
    2. PTS2 - Severe Impairments. In both bike and run segments, amputee athletes may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices.
    3. PTS3 – Significant Impairments. In both bike and run segments, the athlete may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices.
    4. PTS4 – Moderate Impairments. In both bike and run segments, the athlete may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices.
    5. PTS5 – Mild Impairments. In both bike and run segments, the athlete may use approved prosthesis or other supportive device.
    6. PTVI - Total or Partial visual Impairment (IBSA/IPC defined sub-classes B1, B2, and B3): Includes athletes who are totally blind, from no light perception in either eye, to some light perception (B1) and partially sighted athletes (B2, B3). One guide is mandatory throughout the race. Must ride a tandem during the bike segment.

National Championship Division

The athlete must follow ALL steps (A, B and C) below in order to be eligible to compete in the National Championship division:

A. Successful completion of a USAT-Sanctioned or ITU-Sanctioned sprint distance triathlon between the following distances:

  1. Swim: 500 meters - 1,000 meters
  2. Bike: 15 kilometers - 30 kilometers 
  3. Run: 3 kilometers - 6 kilometers

B. Within the minimum finishing time noted below:

  • Sport Class Qualification Time:
    • Women PTWC: 1:30:05
    • Women PTS2: 1:41:27
    • Women PTS3: 1:45:10
    • Women PTS4: 1:35:40
    • Women PTS5: 1:28:08
    • Women PTVI: 1:26:50
    • Men PTWC: 1:14:15
    • Men PTS2: 1:26:57
    • Men PTS3: 1:28:15
    • Men PTS4: 1:20:03
    • Men PTS5: 1:15:03
    • Men PTVI: 1:18:20

Classification will occur on July 18 and 19 at a time and location TBA.

*If an athlete has not been classified and unsure what sport class they fit into, please email Paratriathlon@usatriathlon.org with the medical diagnosis form and we will do our best educated guess as to where the athlete fits.

**All final determinations on sport class and qualification will be determined at the national classification opportunity in the days leading into the event. Please note there is a chance that if an athlete changes sport classes from the educated guess they will need to show proof of a qualification race in the new sport class within the specified qualification time.

C. The triathlon must be completed in the time frame between May 1, 2018 and July 2, 2019. Registration for the National Championship will close on July 2, 2019.
