U.S. Olympic Team Qualification Criteria

The selection period for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team began in Tokyo on Aug. 15-16, 2019, with the ITU test event. U.S. elite triathletes competing in the Tokyo ITU World Olympic Qualification Event had to finish in the top eight overall to automatically qualify for an Olympic Games spot, and a maximum of two athletes per gender could qualify. Summer Rappaport finished fifth in the women's race, becoming the first U.S. athlete to qualify.

Details of all qualification processes, which were adjusted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and one-year delay of the Games, are available at usatriathlon.org/gamescriteria. World Triathlon announced March 18, 2021 that the qualification window would re-open May 1 and remain open no later than June 21.

ITU Qualification Criteria

Triathlon in the Olympic Games will feature a total field of 55 men and 55 women. A maximum of three athletes per gender per national federation (NF) will be allowed. Only eight NFs will be allowed three athletes per gender and all others will be allowed a maximum of two. For more details, visit usatriathlon.org/gamescriteria
