Athlete Evaluation and Selection for the 2021 IHF Men's World Championships

The Men’s National Team Selection Committee will be identifying and evaluating talented team handball athletes for the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championships, currently scheduled to be held January 13 – 31, 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made USA Team Handball sponsored activities such as in-person national team tryouts and training camps challenging to conduct. Therefore, we will be conducting the player pool identification and evaluations utilizing video submissions for the World Championship, taking place in January of 2021.


Evaluation for Senior Men’s National Team Selection Process:


Timeline:

  • November 2, 2020: Notification for athlete evaluation
  • November 14, 2020: Athlete submission deadline
  • November 15, 2020: Athlete selection provisional list formed (35 athletes make a provisional list)
  • November 15, 2020: Provisional list sent to International Handball Federation 
  • December 5, 2020: Final selections conducted for World Championships
  • December 5, 2020: Notification of selection and convocation letters sent to athletes 

All interested athletes must meet the following requirements:

  • Athlete must have a valid U.S. Passport with more than 6 months remaining from last date of the World Championships
  • Athlete must have a current 'greenlighted' NCSI Background Check, must meet the most recent requirements of the USOPC Responsible Sport Organization background check policy
  • The ‘greenlight’ NCSI Background Check must have been issued within a minimum of 24 months and will not expire during the dates of the World Championships
  • If no Background Check is on record with USA Team Handball, the athlete must pay for a Background Check to be completed at his own expense
  • Athlete must have a current Safe Sport Training Certification for 2020 on record with USA Team Handball
  • Athlete must be physically able to perform during the designated competition period
  • Athlete must agree to follow and sign the USA Team Handball Code of Conduct
  • Athlete must follow ALL Men’s National Team rules
  • Athlete must follow ALL prescribed COVID-19 Return to Play Policies of USA Team Handball
  • Athlete must acknowledge the risks of international travel and physical requirements of World Championships
  • Athlete must acknowledge his willingness to participate

Athlete Video Submission Criteria for Evaluation:


Athletes interested in being considered for evaluation should submit a 15-minute video that shows an example of his playing abilities, including the following:

  • Running
  • Jumping
  • Passing
  • Catching
  • Shooting
  • Offensive attack
  • Defensive techniques
  • Goalies will be evaluated on skills specific to the position, including techniques for shot blocking and passing
  • Game situations (if the athlete has video of participating in a competition, this would be the preferred method for evaluating skills)
