San Francisco CalHeat Handball Club Hosts 14th California Cup This Weekend

Jan. 22, 2020, 8 a.m. (ET)

New York City earned the women’s title in 2019, as San Francisco CalHeat won on the men’s side. This year’s competition features one more women’s team as compared to 2019.

Thirteen handball teams from across North America will travel to San Francisco this weekend to compete in the first major tournament of 2020: the 14th annual California Cup.

The tournament will be held in Centerville Jr. High School in Fremont, California, one of the only facilities in the U.S. to house a fully-marked Olympic-size team handball court.

Competition starts on Friday, Jan. 24 at 3:30 PM PST, and concludes on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 5 PM.

The women's teams will compete in a round robin, while the men's teams will be split into two groups, one group of four (4) and one of three (3), with group winners advancing to the final.

2020 marks the 14th edition of the CalCup, with the tournament beginning in 2007. New York City earned the women’s title in 2019, as San Francisco CalHeat won on the men’s side. This year’s competition features one more women’s team as compared to 2019.

“Our tournament always had good interest, especially from teams located on the west coast, but with the continued support of Chicago (continuous participation since 2015), Houston, Alberta, and very recently, New York City, the event has brought the attention of teams from all corners of the nation,” said event organizer and CalHeat leader Danilo Rojevic.

“It is now one of the most competitive handball events in the United States — like some kind of mini Nationals. We've also started to invest and spend significantly more on referees and medical staff to make sure players are surrounded by the best professionals in their areas of expertise.”

CalHeat will live-stream the event on their Facebook page and will provide Instagram coverage through their account and through the USA Team Handball account.

The tournament is free to attend and open to the public. All are welcome.
