USA Team Handball Names Ryan Johnson As New Chief Executive Officer

COLORADO SPRINGS (December 9, 2020) – USA Team Handball (USATH) is pleased to announce the addition of Ryan Johnson as the organization’s newest Chief Executive Officer. Johnson comes to USATH with over a decade of experience in sales, marketing, and nonprofit/NGB management.

Speaking on behalf of the USATH Board of Directors, Michael Wall, USA Team Handball President and Chair, stated, 

“We are thrilled to welcome Ryan and his experience and enthusiasm to our organization. He is driven to lead our sport to greater prominence in the United States and in international competition.”

Prodigy Search, a national executive search firm, conducted the broad-scale recruitment process for the new hire.

“I am incredibly honored to have been chosen to lead USA Team Handball," Johnson said. "I'm excited for the opportunity to serve our members as we grow the game domestically and compete at the highest level internationally. I cannot wait to get started."

Johnson started his professional career as National Events Coordinator for USA Wrestling, working on the organization and presentation of major USA Wrestling regional, national and international events. He served in this capacity from June 2009 through April 2012.

He served as Director of Marketing, Athletics for Utah Valley University from May 2012 through November 2013. In this position, Johnson oversaw game day operations and sponsored integration for all home sporting events for the Division I athletics program there. His next post was Assistant Athletic Director – Marketing at South Dakota State University, from November 2013 through July 2014. He managed a number of programs for the Div. I athletics program there, including sponsor integration and game day operations.

Johnson returned to USA Wrestling in August 2014, assuming a new position as Director of Event Marketing. During his time at USAW, he led the U.S. Olympic Trials and World Wrestling Championships, including their international hospitality program in Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Budapest, and Nur-Sultan, and in current development for Tokyo and Oslo. Johnson was awarded the 56th Annual Young Participants Session Attendee for the International Olympic Academy in Greece.

As Marketing Director for the UWW World Wrestling Championships, which were held in Las Vegas, Nev. in September 2015, Johnson's efforts helped lead to a record $1.3 million in ticket sales. His efforts helped USA Wrestling, through the efforts of staff and volunteers, to present what was considered the most successful World Championships ever hosted.

Johnson was born in California and raised in Colorado. He attended University of Northern Colorado, where he received two Bachelor of Science degrees in 2009, Business Administration (Marketing) and Mathematics (Applied Statistics). He went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree in Marketing and Project Management from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in December 2012.
