Competition Format & Qualification Process For The U.S. Open Nationals Elite Division

Men's ELITE
8 teams will qualify for the men's ELITE division of the US Open Nationals 2020:
  1. ELITE division champions 2019 - San Francisco CalHeat 1
  2. Northeast League D1 Winner*
  3. Northeast League D1 Runner-up*
  4. Midwest League Winner**
  5. Wild Card #1
  6. Wild Card #2
  7. Wild Card #3
  8. Wild Card #4
* the Northeast League D1 will have 7 teams this season:
  • New York City THC 1
  • Boston THC
  • Army West Point Black
  • DC Diplomats
  • New York City THC 2
  • Army West Point Gold
  • West Virginia University
** the Midwest League will have 4 teams this season:
  • Chicago Inter Handball 1
  • Minnesota TH
  • Milwaukee United HB
  • Concordia Cobbers TH
No other regions have committed to hosting a regional qualifier so all other spots will be Wild Card. Those Wild Card spots will be awarded based on the rules set forth in the rule book, with the following events expected to be counted:
  • Michael Lipov Memorial Cup X - Chicago, IL - Oct. 25-27
  • Texas Cup 2019 - Dallas, TX - Dec. 7-8
  • California Cup XIV - Fremont, CA - Jan. 24-26
  • Blue Cup - Chapel Hill, NC - Feb 14-16
  • Valley of the Sun 2020 - Tempe, AZ - Feb 22-23
  • Cpt. Scott Pace Memorial 2020 - West Point, NY - Apr. 4-5
For those events to count, they still have to comply with all the rules and be publicly visible so that you can contact hosts if you wish to register your team.

Women's ELITE
It is still too soon to know if there will be a women's ELITE division (based on participation) but, if there are enough teams to establish an ELITE division, the following teams would qualify:
  1. Women's National Champions 2019 - New York City THC
  2. Northeast League Winner***
  3. Northeast League Runner-up***
  4. Wild Card #1
  5. Wild Card #2
  6. etc... up to 8 teams maximum

***the Northeast League Women's Division will have 9 teams this season:
  • New York City THC
  • Boston THC
  • Army West Point Black
  • DC Diplomats
  • Carolina
  • Penn State Blue
  • Philly TH
  • Army West Point Gold
  • Penn State White

Open divisions for both men and women will be established based on participation levels and communicated closer to the event.
