(Official Lima 2019 Pan American Games Bronze Medal: On the line tonight when Team USA takes on Cuba at 7:00 PM (US ET)
The USA Women last night faced five time defending Pan American Games Team Handball Champions, Brazil and came out on the short end, 35-9. At the start of the match, thanks to some strong 6-0 defense, the U.S. was able to stay within contact and trailed 5-2 at the 15 minute mark. The rest of the first half, however, was all Brazil as the U.S. struggled to score, started to turn the ball over more and Brazil capitalized on fast breaks. Brazil went on 10-1 stretch and pushed the lead to 15-3 at the break. The second half continued to be more of the same with Brazil winning the match 35-9. Jence Rhoads led the USA offense, scoring 5 goals on 8 shots. Adriana Cardosa led Brazil with 8 goals, doing a lot of that scoring from the wing and fast breaks.

On the positive side of things, the U.S. doesn’t have time to dwell on this heavy loss as they will play tonight for the Bronze medal against rivals, Cuba. Cuba, also suffered a big loss losing to Argentina 31-21 in the other semifinal, which is similar to the USA’s 26-15 loss to Argentina in Group Play. More recently, the USA and Cuba had a head to head encounter at the North American & Caribbean Championships with Cuba winning 27-21. A match that was much closer than the final score indicates.
Tonight’s match will be on ESPN 3 at 7:00 PM (US ET)
