USA Loses to Argentina, but Ready for Key Matchup vs the Dominican Republic

The American women lost their first match in group play to Argentina, 26-15. The match started out as a close contest with the U.S. trailing just 5-4 midway through the first half.  Argentina, then went on a 4 goal run to open up a 9-4 lead.The teams then traded goals for the eventual 13-8 halftime lead.The second half saw Argentina gradually pull away from the USA for the eventual 11 goal margin of victory.

Jence Rhoads and Nicole Andersen led the U.S. in scoring with 5 goals each.Other goals scorers were Maria Vallone (2), Zoe Lombard (1), Kathy Darling (1) and Julia Taylor (1).Elke Karsten led Argentina scoring with 5 goals.

While disappointed with the outcome against the group favorites the U.S. felt that they executed their game plan fairly well against a good team, playing physical defense and avoiding too many fast breaks. They are also focused on their next opponent.

Team Captain Sarah Gascon, “We are moving on and thinking about beating Dominican Republic. Our job now is to recover and get ready for tomorrow. Both teams know what is on the line. We have been training for this moment. We are ready!”
