The USA Men wrapped up Pan American Games group play yesterday with a 36-24 loss to Chile. With both teams looking to advance to the semifinals the match served as a de facto quarterfinal. The opening minutes started out evenly with both teams taking leads and trading goals. The U.S. even led 4-2 at the ten minute mark following a goal from Sam Hoddersen. However, with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the half and the score tied at 9-9, Chile took control of the match and never looked back. A combination of turnovers, missed shots and fast breaks saw Chile outscore the U.S. 8-2 for a 17-11 halftime lead.
In the second half, the U.S. and Chile played evenly for the most part as the U.S. could not make a dent into the damage that had been done earlier. The U.S. did cut the lead to 5 goals in a couple of instances, but Chile was able to successfully respond both times and the final outcome was never in doubt.
Gary Hines led a balanced U.S. scoring attack with 5 goals. Other USA goal scoring: Ty Reed (4), Ian Hueter (4), Abou Fofana (3), Drew Donlin (3), Patrick Hueter (3), Sam Hoddersen (2), Sayed Shalaby (1), Nicolas Robinson (1). Sebastian Ceballos and Rodrigo Salinas led Chile in scoring with 8 goals each.
