USA Opens Emerging Nations Tourney with Dominating Win over Barbados

April 08, 2019, 7:45 p.m. (ET)

The U.S. Men opened their NORCA Emerging Nations campaign with a comprehensive and dominating 68-12 win over Barbados.  Barbados is relatively new to handball and their lack of experience was evident from the opening whistle.  Barbados was unable to mount an offensive attack and multiple turnovers led to a flurry of fast break goals and a 37-3 halftime score.  The second half was more of the same and USA Coach Hedin commented after the match that it was a "good running session for the team."  He also noted that the team had just arrived in Barbados yesterday and that the match essentially served as their first practice.  Newcomers Melvin Wheaton (12 goals), Patrick Hueter (11) and Ben Liberty (7) made a good impression in their debut and Coach Hedin was pleased with the entire team's performance noting that they had kept their discipline despite the lopsided score.

The U.S. has a rest day tomorrow (Tuesday) and the will take on Cuba Wednesday at 6:00 PM Local / USA ET.  Cuba will play Barbados tomorrow and assuming they win the match vs the U.S. will decide who wins the group.
