Interest Surges from the Rio Olympics Tryouts Scheduled for Men's and Women’s Team

As USA Olympians in Team Handball say, “When Americans actually see our sport, they fall in love with it!”  And so it is the case once again this Olympic Games as NBC has featured the sport on many broadcasts, leaving viewers throughout the United States totally intrigued by Team Handball.

Frequently described as Water Polo on a court, or Soccer except you use your hands, Team Handball is so attractive to Americans because it encompasses the elements of our nation’s most popular sports.  If you watch the game you immediately recognize it has the speed and quickness of Basketball and Volleyball, the coordination and spectacular throwing motions of Baseball and Softball, the obvious physicality of Football and Ice Hockey, and the grace and strength of Gymnastics.  When you sprinkled in the strategies of all of our favorite sports, you get a super sport!  A brew of all that is great in competitive athletics, spectacular, fast, quick, high scoring, physical defense, team work, punctuated with incredible goalkeeping.  What’s there not to love about this sport that features men’s and women’s disciplines! And there is a rising Beach version of the sport as well, that is seeking the same Olympic Program inclusion as it will enjoy in the next Youth Olympic Games!

This spike in interest in the sport is bringing dividends to the USA National Team Program as both Head Coach Javier Garcia-Cuesta of the Men’s National Team, and Christian Latulippe of the Women’s National Team are now receiving an influx of emails from athletes interested in learning more about our high performance program, perhaps with an eye on making Team USA for the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru leading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The USA Team Handball National Team Residency Program is a partnership effort with the School of Kinesiology of Auburn University, located in Auburn, Alabama.  The School of Kinesiology and Auburn University have developed and ideal venue for the USA to train and practice.  Their annual value in kind contribution of over a million dollars a year enables USA Team Handball to offer the best of all training opportunities to those athletes committed to trying to achieve greatness and seeking to help the USA become competitive in the world elite national team competitions.

Those athletes interested in trying out to demonstrate they have the physical and mental attributes to be considered for the USA National Team Program and a chance to become an Olympian should send an email to Head Coach Javier Garcia Cuesta at for the Men’s National Team, and Head Coach Christian Latulippe at for the Women’s National Team.

Tryouts are conducted at the famous Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum on the campus at Auburn University.  The Men’s National Team has a scheduled tryout on October 15th, 2016.  The Women’s National Team has scheduled tryouts for October 29th-30th and December 17th-18th, 2016.
