COLORADO SPRINGS – Michael D. Cavanaugh, CEO of USA Team Handball (USATH), recently announced the appointment of Dennis Berkholtz as the Chairperson of BEACH Handball.

The sport, popular throughout Europe and South America, has experienced extensive growth over the past 10 years. Cavanaugh commented, “the International Handball Federation and the Pan American Team Handball Federations have a keen interest in the development of BEACH Handball around the globe. It’s our goal to build a program in the U.S. and ultimately compete at the highest international levels of competition on both the Men’s and Women’s side of BEACH Handball.”

Berkholtz has an extensive sport and business background. He was captain of the 1972 U.S. Team Handball team in Munich, Germany, and coach of the 1976 U.S. team in Montreal, Canada. He also competed in 2 World Championships – 1970 in Paris, France, and 1974 in Berlin, Germany.

As a leader in handball spanning many years, he served as President of USATH (1996/2000) and as an Executive Committee Member of the Pan American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) from 2000 to 2008. Prior to the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, Dennis chaired the Local Organizing Committee relocating the Men’s and Women’s National Teams to Atlanta. He was instrumental in rallying support from the Atlanta community as well as securing a major sponsorship agreement with The Weather Channel.

During the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games and the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games he served as a ticketing, housing, and marketing consultant with a client base including The Weather Channel, Nike, Reebok, Texaco, and Morgan Stanley.

Working with USATH Board Member Bob Djokovich, Berkholtz has developed a five-year BEACH Handball program defining BEACH Handball’s competitive season as April, May, and June, and establishing BEACH leagues on the West Coast of California and the South and West Coasts of Florida. Berkholtz stated, “We’ll also explore the challenges of beginning BEACH Handball programs in colleges and universities, getting BEACH Handball on television, as well as hosting a Pan American Beach Handball Championship in the near future.”

Berkholtz is a 1967 graduate of Kansas State University, and was a Wildcat basketball player and member of the K-state golf team. He currently serves as the Founder and Commissioner of the National Senior League - an internet based national Wii bowling competition for seniors.
