2014 College National Championships Begin This Weekend at Auburn University

AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn University Team Handball Club and Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau will be co-hosting the 2014 USA Team Handball College National Championships on April 11-13 at Auburn University.

Collegiate team handball clubs from across the United States will travel to Auburn to compete for the Men’s and Women’s Championship trophy. Three women’s teams and 12 men’s teams will be participating in the competition weekend. Members of the Men’s and Women’s National Handball Teams will also be competing in exhibition games during the tournament.

Tournament matches will start at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and will take place in the Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum and the Auburn University Recreation and Wellness Center. Admission is free to the general public.

“We look forward to seeing all the teams this weekend at College Nationals,” said Maurice Godwin, president of the Auburn University Team Handball Club. “It’s an honor and privilege to be hosting the 2014 College Handball Championship at Auburn, especially in our club’s first year!”

Auburn University was named the site of the USA Team Handball Residency Program last August. The Auburn club team won the bid to host the college championship tournament in December.

"We were very pleased with the quality of proposals we received," said USATH Technical Director Mariusz Wartalowicz in December, "but taking into consideration factors such as our strategic regional developmental pathways, the bid from Auburn provides opportunities that we hope to capitalize on in the coming years."

Wartalowicz and other USA Team Handball representatives are expected to be on Auburn’s campus this weekend for the tournament, including Mike Cavanaugh, new USATH Chief Executive Officer, and Harvey Schiller, new USATH President and Chairman. Cavanaugh is the former Executive Director of USA Team Handball, as well as former CEO of USA Table Tennis. Schiller is former Executive Director of the United States Olympic Committee, and former Commissioner of the NCAA Southeastern Conference.

“The passion of everyone who is involved with USA Team Handball is infectious!” said Godwin. “The Auburn and Opelika communities have a treasure in our backyard with the National Team Handball Residency Program on Auburn’s campus, and we look forward to hosting many more handball events.”

The games will be available for live streaming on the web. Information about live streaming will be posted on the USA Team Handball website before the tournament.
