(March 16, 2020) - Following discussions related to the COVID-19 outbreak, the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, scheduled for Herning, Denmark in May has been cancelled. There are currently no plans to reschedule the tournament, however USA Taekwondo will update immediately if there is a change in that position.
World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said in an announcement overnight: “With regard to the 2020 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, I understand that the Danish government has announced a series of temporary measures to combat COVID-19. One of these measures is the banning of gatherings involving more than 100 people indoors. So far, these measures are in force until the end of March – but they are likely to be extended. It is a decision that we at World Taekwondo respect and accept.
In the best interest of all stakeholders, I wish to hereby announce that the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships originally scheduled to be held in Herning on May 21-24, has been cancelled. At this juncture, there is no discussion on organising the Championships at a later time, at least until the COVID-19 situation has passed.
All participants will have their registration fees refunded and all hotel bookings made through GMS or directly to the organiser will be 100% refunded as well. It is an unfortunate decision, but we wish to recognise the outstanding efforts of the Danish Taekwondo Federation and the Danish authorities.”
USA Taekwondo would like to reassure all 2020 Poomsae National Team members that, should the tournament be rescheduled for a date later in 2020, the original team selection process will remain valid.
We would like to wish all Taekwondo practitioners and their families in the U.S. and around the world good health, and send our best wishes to all in these challenging times.
