Statement on the Covid 19

March 12, 2020, 6:08 p.m. (ET)

(March 12, 2020) - USA Taekwondo has been receiving many questions from people concerned about coronavirus COVID-19, which is the virus responsible for what has now been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. It is USA Taekwondo’s policy to follow advice from the World Health Organization and local health authorities.

The health and safety of athletes, officials and event organizers is a priority for USA Taekwondo, and the following information is issued in relation to sanctioned tournaments (predominantly State Championships) happening in the next 30 to 60 days:

At this time USA Taekwondo is not enforcing cancellations on event organizers, but strongly recommends that they contact their state health department immediately for guidance on hosting activities in their communities. USA Taekwondo also strongly recommends that organizers of these events consider cancelling or postponing any and all events within this time frame. We will update this guidance as the situation changes.

Cancellations inevitably lead to concerns and questions regarding the 2020 USA Taekwondo National Championships in July, as there is a requirement to have attended a state championship in order to qualify. In the instance where an athlete’s home State Championship does not take place USA Taekwondo will issue a waiver to any affected athlete, and they will be qualified automatically for the National Championships in San Antonio. Registration fees will also be refunded in the event of a cancellation.

We are optimistic that the situation will have stabilized enough in time to host the National Championships as planned in July.

Across the country and the world, the Coronavirus situation is evolving rapidly. USA Taekwondo will provide regular updates to the public as we deal with the challenges we all face together. Please regularly visit USATKD’s website and social media platforms for the most current information - we will provide frequent updates as details change.
