Inaugural U.S. Grand Slam Set For Sept. 27-29

Grand Slam logo 2019(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- USA Taekwondo is excited to announce that the Senior invitations have been sent out to the athletes who qualified for the inaugural U.S. Grand Slam and we are delighted to have these top athletes compete. The  U.S. Grand Slam Invitational Series will take place at the U.S. National Center of Excellence in Colorado Springs, September 27-29.

 

This elite level event will be sanctioned at the new 16.0 point level and the first grand slam event will be for all senior world class black belts, providing high level competition and giving the top U.S. athletes an unmissable opportunity to  benchmark themselves against the best while scoring big points in the race for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Importantly for seniors, this event is included in the 2020 Olympic Athlete Selection Procedures, and performances in the Grand Slam will be taken into consideration for qualification (see detailed procedure for more information).

 

The Grand Slam Series will be held over three separate weekends on consecutive months (September, October and November). For the first Grand Slam, the Senior athletes have qualified for this prestigious new event in the following ways:

  

Senior Athletes (16 athletes in each bracket, combined Olympic Weight Divisions) eligibility:

 

  • Athletes must have been ranked in the top six of the Tusah USATKD National Rankings after Nationals, based off the Tusah USAKTD National Rankings posted on Thursday, July 18 
  • OR Won gold or silver at the 2019 USATKD National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the World Class Senior Black Belt Division 
  • Must be a current member with USATKD
