USATKD Invites Applications for Regional Head Coach Positions

Sept. 18, 2018, 10:14 a.m. (ET)

USA Taekwondo is today opening the application process for Regional Head Coaches in sparring, poomsae and para-taekwondo. There are eight regions and coaches will be considered for selection in the region in which they reside. In larger regions, and depending upon the number of quality applicants, USA Taekwondo may appoint an Assistant Head Coach, Junior/Cadet coach or other positions in addition to the Regional Head Coach.

High Performance Director May Spence said: “We’re looking for innovative, forward-thinking and team-playing coaches to join our national leadership group with an ambitious goal in mind – to Dominate in ’28. A major component of our new initiative to create the future for taekwondo in the United States, these coaches will work with the High Performance Department and National Coaching Directors Paul Green and Gareth Brown to refine and implement the strategies needed to develop a production line of U.S. athletes who are capable of winning internationally.

Other responsibilities will include, amongst others, working with fellow coaches in each region to provide a vital link between home coaches and the National Office; ensuring USATKD programs and strategies effectively shape coaching philosophies on a national level; talent identification of athletes/coaches and new event conception and planning to provide more opportunities for athletes nationwide to earn experience and U.S. National Ranking points.

These prestigious appointments will give the successful applicants a major opportunity to help Create the Future of taekwondo in the United States, and will be made on an annual basis. USATKD will decide each year whether to simply appoint the same coach to the position for another year, or to reopen applications again for the following year. These decisions will be made based on performance in the role over the course of the appointment.

Regional Head Coaches will receive some great benefits as a thank you for their efforts, including:

  • exclusive apparel
  • waived membership fees
  • free event coaching credentials
  • free continuing education.

USA Taekwondo Executive Director Steve McNally said: “We believe that this new structure will leverage the masses of coaching talent in the United States more effectively than ever before, creating a goals led mentality and providing U.S. athletes with a support system vastly better equipped to assist them on their journeys – safely and successfully."

Coaches interested in the positions can apply using the form below. Please answer the questions as fully as possible no later than end of day, October 5 2018. Applicants under consideration will be contacted for further discussions shortly after that date, with appointments made for 2019 announced in November.
