Massive 2018 Team Trials Event Scheduled for Denver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 17, 2018) - The best Taekwondo athletes across all ages and sport disciplines will descend on Denver, Colorado, late next month to compete in one of the biggest joint team trials events ever to be held in the United States. Teams will be selected for a packed international calendar of events throughout 2018 at the USA Taekwondo National Team Trials, to be held from February 28 to March 3 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. The trials event determines the 2018 Pan Am Championship Senior Sparring and Poomsae teams, the Junior National Team for the Junior World Championships and the competitors for 2018 Youth Olympic Games International Qualification event.

NOTE: Participation in the 2018 Team Trials will qualify you to compete in that division at the 2018 National Championships. For the Youth Olympic Games Team Trials, an athlete will qualify him/herself in both of the combined Junior divisions and may choose to compete in either at the 2018 Junior National Championships.

Semi-finalists and finalists from the 2017 Senior National Championships and members of the 2017 Senior National Team are qualified for 2018 Senior Sparring Team Trials. Please note, as stated in the published selection procedures, no athlete from the 2017 National Team meets the criteria to be automatically named to the 2018 National Team, and as such all weight categories will compete for selection at the trial. The deadline for performance waivers per section I.A.4.f. of the selection procedures is February 5, 2018. Please see the selection procedures posted on our website for seeding criteria.

Junior National Team Trials are open to all Juniors who meet the published selection criteria requirements. Please see the selection procedures posted on our website for seeding criteria.

2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Team Trials are open to any athlete who meets the published selection criteria and was born between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2002. Only 6 combined weight classes will be contested at YOG Team Trials: Men’s under 48kg, between 48kg and 55kg, and between 55kg and 63kg; Women’s under 44kg, between 44kg and 49kg, and over 63kg. The Senior Poomsae Team Trials for the Pan Am Championships will be an open event for those athletes that meet the published selection criteria (to be published shortly). These trials will include all World Taekwondo poomsae divisions (individual, pair, team) for athletes 18 and older in recognized and freestyle poomsae. Due to the recent announcement of the Pan Am Championships dates it has become necessary to hold a team trial earlier in the year to select the athletes for this competition.Please note, the team trials for the 2018 World Poomsae Championships will be held at the 2018 USA Taekwondo National Championships.

  • The teams selected at the Senior National Team Trials in both sparring and poomsae will compete at the Pan Am Championships in Spokane, Wash., June 6-8.
  • The Junior National Team will compete at the 2018 World Taekwondo Junior Championships in Hammamet, Tunisia, April 9-13.
  • The Youth Olympic Games Team Trial winners will go to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games Qualification event in Hammamet, Tunisia April 6-7 for the chance to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 1-6.

NOTE: The Colorado State Championships will be held the weekend of March 3. Extend your stay in Colorado and compete in the Colorado State Championships and earn valuable points toward your USAT National Ranking in 2018. This will help in your seeding for future tournaments and help earn a spot towards Team Trials and earn All-American status.
