Junior National Team member Garrett Batt won gold in the male bantamweight division, while American Gianni Corsi claimed silver.
COSTA RICA (Aug. 31, 2017) -- U.S. National Team members continued climbing the medal stand Wednesday during the second day of competition at the Pan American Junior & Cadet Taekwondo Championships. Nine medals were won by National Team members, including five gold, three silver and a bronze.
In junior sparring action, Sharif Salim (Carson, Calif.) and Garrett Batt both claimed gold medals. Salim won his in the male finweight (-45kg) division, while Batt placed first in the male bantamweight (-51kg) class. Junior National Team member Marissa Mabanag (San Jose, Calif.) took bronze in the female bantamweight (-46kg) division.
Other American fighters reaching the podium in the junior competition were Timothy Snow taking gold in male lightweight (-59kg), Gianni Corsi winning silver in male bantamweight (-51kg), and Shahira Nava winning bronze in female bantamweight (-46kg).
Cadet National Team member Sophia Oceguera won the female lightweight gold medal, with American Kiley Mehringer taking silver.
Cadet sparring saw National Team members Sophia Oceguera (Stockton, Calif.), Ryan Real (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Martin Lado (Simi Valley, Calif.) win gold medals in their respective divisions. Oceguera captured the female lightweight (-44kg) crown, Real won the male finweight (-33kg) division, and Lado was victorious in the male lightweight (-49kg) class. Cadet National Team teammates Piper Hartzler (Wichita, Kan.), Maya Mata (Coppell, Texas) and Adrian Rivas (Cicero, Ill.) all won silver medals; Hartzler in female finweight (-29kg), Mata in female light middleweight (-51kg) and Rivas in male light middleweight (-57kg).
Other U.S. competitors earning medals in the cadet competition were Gabriel Bonsol in male bantamweight (-41kg) and Kiley Mehringer in female lightweight (-44kg). Both won silver medals.
Competition at the Pan American Cadet & Junior Taekwondo Championships runs through Friday.
