(May 13, 2015) -- American TJ Curry (Hercules, Calif.) won two matches to reach the round of 16 during the second day of competition at the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Wednesday.
Curry opened the day with a 16-2 victory over San Marino's Francesco Seynghyun Maiani in the male lightweight (-74kg) division. He then went on to post a superiority win over China's Funing Liu after fighting to a 9-9 tie. But in the round of 16, Curry dropped a 12-8 decision to Portugal's Julio Ferreira and was eliminated from the tournament.
Reaching the medal round in the male lightweight division, which will be contested on Thursday, were Iran's Masoud Hajizavareh, Russia's Albert Gaun, Uzbekistan's Nikita Rafalovich and Mali's Ismael Coulibaly.
Charlotte Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) fought to a 4-4 tie with Great Britain's Charlie Maddock in the female flyweight ( -49kg) round of 32, but Maddock was able to score the golden point in the overtime period to pull out the 5-4 win.
The final four competitors in the female flyweight division that will be battling for the medals on Thursday are China's Jingyu Wu, Russia's Svetlana Igumenova, Korea's Min-Ah Ha and Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic.
Day three of the WTF World Championships on Thursday will feature the female welterweight (-67kg) and male featherweight (-68kg) divisions. 2012 Olympic bronze medalists Paige McPherson (Sturgis, S.D.) and Terrence Jennings (Alexandria, Va.) will in action for Team USA as it tries to end its medal drought.
