TORONTO, Canada (July 21, 2015) -- Paige McPherson (Sturgis, S.D.) and Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) kept the U.S. medal haul rolling along Tuesday at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. McPherson captured the gold medal in the women's -67kg division while Lopez took bronze in the men's -80kg class. Their medals come a day after Cheyenne Lewis (Elk Grove, Calif.) won gold in the women's -57kg division.
On Tuesday, McPherson opened with a 5-3 victory over Cuba's Daima Villalon, followed by an 8-6 win over Brazil's Julia Vasconcelos in the semifinals. In the gold medal final against Victoria Heredia of Mexico, McPherson piled up four head shots, including three in the second round, en route to a dominating 13-1 win to claim the gold medal.
Lopez opened his day with a 12-4 win over Guillermo Rodas of Guatemala and then downed Chile's Elias Robles, 4-3, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Lopez lost a tight 3-2 decision to the Dominican Republic's Moises Hernandez, but rebounded in the bronze medal match to defeat Venezuela's Javier Medina, 7-3.
Pan Am Games competition concludes Wednesday with Phillip Yun (Diamond Bar, Calif) fighting in the men's +80kg division and Jackie Galloway (Wylie, Texas) in the women's +67kg class.
