Pan Am Games team finalized in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (April 11, 2015) -- The 2015 Pan American Games Team Trials concluded on Saturday in Fresno, Calif., and the eight-member U.S. team will be a force to contend with come July, boasting four Olympians including three Olympic and Pan Am Games medalists.

Qualifying for the team on Saturday were Terrence Jennings (Alexandria, Va.) in the male featherweight (-68kg) division, Steven Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas) in the male welterweight (-80kg) division, Phillip Yun (Diamond Bar, Calif.) in the male heavyweight (+80kg) class, Charlotte Craig (Murrieta, Calif.) in the female flyweight (-49kg) division, Paige McPherson (Sturgis, S.D.) in the female welterweight (-67kg) class, and Jackie Galloway (Wylie, Texas) in the female heavyweight (+67kg) division.

Those six athletes will join male flyweight (-58kg) Logan Gerick (Keller, Texas) and female featherweight (-57kg) Cheyenne Lewis (Elk Grove, Calif.) who had previously qualified by being the only athletes in their weight divisions ranked in the top 60 of the World Taekwondo Federation rankings.

In Saturday's action, following the round robin portion of the competition, all the top seeds won their respective fight-offs to secure their roster spots. Jennings defeated Mark Lopez (Sugar Land, Texas), Steven Lopez bested TJ Curry (Hercules, Calif.), Yun beat Stephen Lambdin (Colleyville, Texas), Craig defeated Kelsey Junious (South Windsor, Conn.), McPherson beat Samantha Leidel, and Galloway defeated Lauren Hamon (Coral Gables, Fla.).

Steven Lopez, Jennings, McPherson and Craig all bring veteran Olympic experience to the team. Lopez is a four-time Olympian with gold medals in 2002 and 2004, and a bronze in 2008. Jennings and McPherson both earned bronze medals at the 2012 Games, while Craig was a member of the 2008 Olympic Team. In addition, Lopez won Pan Am Games gold in 1999 and 2003, while at the last Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2011, McPherson won silver and Jennings took home a bronze.

The 2015 Pan American Games will be held in Toronto, Canada, July 10-26, with the taekwondo competition being staged July 19-22 at the Mississauga Sports Centre.
