SELECTION PROCESS:

For Age Events: U-11, U-13, U-15, and U-19:

The 2023 US National Champion for each age category will be awarded the First Position on the 2023 US National Team for that respective age category. Positions 2 through 8 will be determined by a point system. Points towards U.S. National Team will be awarded if athletes place in top 8 at the 2023 Junior National Team Trials (February 25-28, Charlotte, NC) and at the 2023 U.S. Nationals (Forth Worth, Texas, July). At the U.S. Nationals, competition format will be Round Robin (RR) leading to Single Elimination (SE), where losers of semifinals will play 3rd place match, while losers of QF will play placement matches to determine 5th through 8th position to determine the number of points each athlete gets. Based on the number of points each athlete accumulates, there will be a ranking system which will determine positions 2 through 8 of US Junior National Teams.

National Team Trials point system table.

If two players or more players have the same number of points after both events, the final order will be based on the tie-breaking policy.

TIE BREAKING POLICIES:

  1. If 2 players have the same number of points, all head-to-head results will be used to break the tie. (Match, sets and points, just like ITTF Regulations). If 3 players have the same number of points, the standard 3-way tie-break rules will apply with the last result from the respective event to be taken into consideration for tie-break
  2. If head-to-head matches are tied, results against common opponents in that respective tie will be used.
  3. If after the second tie-breaking method, two players are still tied, “Flip a coin” method will be used.

For Age Event: U-17:

The top seven (7) finishers at the 2023 Junior Team Trials (Charlotte, NC) will qualify for the 2023 National Team. The competition format for U17 will be Round Robin (RR) leading to Single

Elimination (SE). The champion for the U17 event at the U.S. Nationals will be directly qualified as #1 in the U17 US National Team

SYSTEM OF PLAY FOR U-11, U-13, U-15, and U-19 at 2023 Junior National Team Trials:

  • Stage 1: Qualification Round Robin Groups (No players will be seeded directly to Stage 2);
  • Stage 2: Round Robin of Twelve (12) players, divided into two (2) groups. Draw is created based on snake by rating (using February 10, 2022, USATT published ratings); and
  • Final Stage: Four (4) players from each group will advance from Stage 2 and then play crossover with the other group (with result carry over).
  • In the case where there are less than 12 entries, there will be no Qualification Stage.
  • All matches will be Best-of-Five

Geographical separation will be used to prevent players from the same Region from competing against each other in the qualification round robin. USATT reserves the right to change the RR format based on the total number of players.
