Sharon Alguetti a Class Act in LYTTC August Open Final

Sharon Alguetti was the player to make an impression at the Lily Yip Table Tennis Center August Open in Dunellen, New Jersey. Leading the field was USA's currently highest rated player Jun Han Wu - that would soon change. Along with the three Alguetti brothers was a field of challengers, the likes of defensive champ and two-time Arnold Challenge winner Jian Li, Cadet Girls World Number 4 Amy Wang, Canadian Cadet Boys Champion Terrence Yeung and a host of others.

Sharon Alguetti would start proceedings with an upset, adding another win over defender Li Jian to an ever-extending lead, in the group stages - a close and tightly contested match. With Li flipped onto the top half of the draw he would run through Adar Alguetti to reach the semifinals, facing the top seeded Wu.

The first two games of the best of five encounter were calm and consistent for Li who patiently defended against Wu who struggled to find rhythm and looked more fatigued than his usual self. Facing a 2-0 deficit it was Wu who fought back into the match and found some competitive form, locking the game back up at 2-2 and forcing to a decider.

Despite his efforts and momentum in his favor going into the fifth game it wouldn't be enough, the tables swung again and saw Li Jian change ends with a 5-0 lead. That lead would prove to be a decisive factor as Wu clawed back but wasn't able to close out - 9-9 in the decider and Li Jian sealed the deal and advanced to the final.

Sharon Alguetti would be waiting for him after advancing over brother Gal Alguetti in the bottom half semifinal. Despite their close match in the group stages it was Sharon Alguetti who put on a display of sheer dominance. Points fell one after another in game one as Alguetti soared to an outstanding 9-0 lead before Li could answer. Variation and angle-play combined with compounding confidence were key in Alguetti continuing to build his lead into the second.

Again in the second game Alguetti took the early lead and pushed onwards toward the end, another one sided affair, 11-4 and a 2-0 lead.

The last set saw a bit more of an even battle with Li launching some strong counterattacks and pushing his way back into the match. A 10-7 lead soon shrank as Alguetti called a timeout at 10-9 with one match point remaining. A fresh shirt and a game plan in mind saw Sharon Alguetti come back out and end the match 11-9 and an impressive 3-0.
