Nguyen Takes out Big Titles at Meiklejohn Senior Open
It was setback for Khoa Nguyen on the Friday session of the 2016 Meiklejohn North American Seniors Open as he fell to the hands of 2331 rated Diane Chen in three straight games (9,8,8) in the Senior Elite Round Robin, who eventually lost in the final to Jimmy Butler after his 6 month hiatus.
Not to be disheartened he came back firing targeting the Over 40 and 50 singles events and he did not disappoint. The over 40 singles event was the drawing card and Nguyen didn't disappoint. With 3 previous titles behind him he blasted through to the final to face last year's World Cup representative Jimmy Butler in the final. Khoa secured his first victory in 9 attempts against the 4 time US National Champion, winning by 4 games to 3.
The result puts Khoa Nguyen, who also won the over 50 singles, up in the records with Jimmy Butler and David Zhuang who now all share 4 titles at the prestigious Senior Event, an impressive feat for the trio who hold a combined 12 titles in the 29 years of Meiklejohn's history.
Khoa also took out the 4200 and 4800 doubles events, giving him a total of 4 titles for the weekend. Diane Chen was the victor of the Over 40 Women's Singles Round Robin while Yong Ren took out the highest rating category at the event, the U2350 Round Robin over Rudy Miranda.
