BEIJING (AP) Wang Chen of the U.S. has lost her quarterfinal match in the Olympic table tennis singles competition, bringing an end to the Americans' best showing ever in the sport.
Wang lost to Li Jia Wei of Singapore with a score of 15-13, 11-6, 12-10, 13-15, 11-4.
Previously, the best finish for the U.S. was when Gao Jun reached the round of 32 in singles and doubles at the Athens Games.
Wang clinched a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Kim Kyung-ah of South Korea 4-3 earlier Thursday. After that win, Wang fell to her knees and burst into tears.
"I'm in the quarterfinals, it's a dream come true," she said.
Wang is retiring after the Olympics and will return home to New York City, where she will continue running her popular pingpong club.
