USA Table Tennis Reschedules
US National Table Tennis Championships for July of 2021
America’s Most Prestigious Table Tennis Tournament for Citizens and Residents will
Get Back to Action at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas on Independence Day, July 4, 2021
(Colorado Springs, CO – September 15, 2020) – USA Table Tennis (“USATT”), the National Governing Body for the sport of table tennis, today announced that the US National Table Tennis Championships have been rescheduled until July of 2021. America’s most prestigious table tennis tournament for citizens and residents was planned to be held December 2020 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, but has now been rescheduled to run from July 4 through July 9, 2021, at the same location.
“USATT has decided to reschedule the US Nationals to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of the American table tennis community and our society more generally,” stated USATT Chief Executive Officer Virginia Sung. “When we moved the original date from July of 2020 to this December, we had reason to believe that there would be significant progress on the containment and treatment of COVID-19. However, our current analysis leads us to believe that it is in the best interest of our participants, patrons, officials and staff to provide additional time for the medical community and public health authorities to gain more control over the health risks associated with the coronavirus. Additionally, we are required to maintain full compliance with the local pandemic restrictions in Las Vegas and the State of Nevada, which as they stand would preclude from currently running this event. We are hopeful that by scheduling the tournament to kick off on Independence Day in 2021, we’ll all be able to celebrate our nation’s birthday by returning to competitive fun at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.”
USATT has hosted an elite table tennis championship in America since 1933, a tradition that continues annually with the US Open Table Tennis Championships, an event that is open to table tennis players throughout the world regardless of citizenship or residency. USATT is currently planning to next host a US Open in December of 2021.
Since 1976, USATT has hosted separate the “closed” event, which is now known as the US Nationals, the championship events for which are open to US citizens only, while certain other events at the tournament are open to all persons living in the United States, regardless of citizenship. For the 2021 US Nationals, USATT is expecting to implement state and regional qualifying tournaments for the championship events. Winners of those events will receive an automatic slot in the main draw of their event. More information on the regionalization plan is expected to be released in the immediate future.
At the most recent US Nationals, held in Las Vegas in July of 2019, Kanak Jha, the number one male player in America, became the first person ever to win four consecutive US National Men’s Singles Championship titles. Current US National Team coach Gao Jun holds the longest consecutive singles championship streak in history, winning on the women’s side seven consecutive times from 1996 through 2002. In 2019, the Women’s Singles Championship title was captured by Lily Zhang, the number one female player in the US, who won the championship title for the fifth time in her playing career. Both Jha and Zhang have qualified for the US Olympic Team and will be part of Team USA when the Tokyo Games are held in the summer of 2021. When held, the next US Nationals are expected to host over 800 participants competing in some 106 events on 100 state of the art table tennis courts.
