Thailand Hosts Its First ITTF Level 3 Course, A Dream Realized!

Creating a national coaching structure for Thailand and using that structure to develop Table Tennis throughout the country was the dream of Don Mudtangam.  The dream was born back in 2005 when Don, at that time a National Coach, worked alongside of ITTF Course Conductor, Richard McAfee to conduct an ITTF Tsunami Relief project in the South of the country.

Over the following years, several ITTF Coaching Courses where held in Thailand and slowly that much needed group of trained coaches began to take shape.  During the recent years, Don became the Secretary General of the Table Tennis Association of Thailand and with the full support of the President of TTAT, Mr. Piradej Pruttipruk, Coaching Education became a major priority.  In the last two years, the TTAT has trained and certified, 5 local ITTF Course Conductors.  Heading up this active group is, , Korakij Sermkijseree the National Team Coach, who is an ITTF Level 2 Course Conductor.

The dream came to full realization on November 9, 2019, as the first ever ITTF Level 3 Coaching Course was held at the Sports Authority’s excellent National Training Center in Bangkok.  Once again, Don was fully involved, not only taking the course but serving as translator once again for ITTF Course Conductor, Richard McAfee (USA).

It was a unique group of nine Thai Coaches participating in the L3 Course.  Four of them are ITTF Course Conductors, one was the National Team Coach for Thailand, and of course Don, Secretary General of the TTAT.  After nine days of hard work that included 5 exams, all the participants passed the course with 5 achieving the high marks necessary to take a future ITTF High Performance Course. Immediately after the L3 Course, the participants took part in a three day camp with member of the Thai National Team to gain more practical experience working with elite athletes.

2019 Was a milestone year for Thailand’s Coaching Program as 11 self-funded ITTF Courses where held, including the first Level 3 Course.  Ten of these courses were conducted by local Thai Course Conductors.

For Don Mudtangam, his long-held dream of setting up a National Coaching Structure has been realized but a new dream will begin in 2020.as the TTAT begins a program of taking coaching education to school systems around the country.  Schools will receive equipment and the ITTF School Teachers Course will be conducted to train the teachers in regions of the country.  Table Tennis has made great strides in Thailand in recent years, no doubt being driven by in large part by their commitment to Coaching Education.
