The USA Table Tennis (USATT) Pan Am Games Selection Committee has completed its work in evaluating candidates to represent the USA in the upcoming Pan American Games in Lima, Peru from July 26-August 11, 2019. In addition to USA athletes Kanak Jha, Nikhil Kumar and Lily Zhang who were previously qualified for the team, the remaining representatives will be Nicholas Tio, Yue “Jennifer” Wu, and Amy Wang.

Nicholas Tio was selected due to his May, 2019 adult world ranking, his consistent international results over the last twelve months, and his performance in the 2018 Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile through which the USA qualified for the Pan Am Games.

Jennifer Wu is currently the highest-ranked USA woman at world #43, was second to Lily Zhang at the Pan Am Games Trial, went further than any other USA athlete in the recent World Championships in Budapest, and has a consistent and very strong record of international results.

Amy Wang is the second ranked junior in the world and has a strong world adult ranking as well. Her recent international credentials include gold and silver medals at the French Junior and Cadet Open, silver at the Pan American Junior Championships in Santa Domingo last July, and a strong World Championships performance including a near-upset of the world’s 10th ranked woman.

Alternates for the team will include Victor Liu, who was second to Nikhil Kumar in the Pan Am Games Trial and scored two upset wins for Team USA at the World Championships; and Wang Xinyue, who performed well in the Pan Am Games Trial and also contributed to the USA’s successful qualification effort in Santiago. Kanak Jha qualified previously by taking Men’s Singles gold in Santiago.

Jennifer Wu’s participation will allow her to defend the gold medal she won in Women’s Singles at the 2015 Pan American games, and she and Lily Zhang will also defend Team USA’s Women’s Team gold to which they each contributed last time.
