2020 Olympic Team Selection Process Modification
April 18, 2019
The USATT High Performance Committee (HPC) announced today that it has made a significant modification to the selection procedure for the 2020 Olympics, which has also been approved by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). This followed input provided to the HPC by the USATT Athlete Advisory Council (AAC), based on comments received from athletes.
The modification preserves the guaranteed place on Team USA for the winners of the 2020 Olympic Trial. What has changed is that in the event Team USA has a three-person team (for men and/or for women), at least one more position on the team will go to athletes based solely on international performance -- either through making the quarter finals of the world championships, or obtaining the highest world ranking of eligible athletes as of February, 2020. The remaining category of a selection committee choice -- based on several specified performance measures including the Olympic Trial -- will be no more than one place on each team.
The AAC listened to the athletes and collaborated with the HPC to bring forward their views and get a positive change made. The change does not jeopardize the high performance direction of USATT in seeking to achieve adult success at the highest international level.
The AAC is the advocate for the athletes, and USATT emphasizes that all athletes should feel comfortable sharing concerns and suggestions with this group.
