The Alameda Hopes camp and tournament was held at the Alameda Table Tennis Center Friday April 13- Sunday April 15.
15 boys and 9 girls participated in the Hopes Camp with participants coming from as far away as Ohio. All were enthusiastic and really worked well together. The camp included off the table fitness, consistency Drills, Foot Work Drills, Service and Service Return, Attack after Service, and Match Play for tournament preparation.
Coaches Pieke Franssen, Mike Lauro and Vikash Sahu coached the 4 x 2 hour sessions. Alameda national team members and other high level juniors served as practice partners.
On Saturday in between the morning and evening sessions, players who did not travel home took a well deserved break to go out for a picnic lunch, and explore the natural history programs and exhibits at Alameda’s Crab Cove Visitor Center at Crown Memorial State Beach.
The Crab Cove visitor center is dedicated to interpreting relationships between people and the earth's marine environment. Since 1979, the Crab Cove Visitor Center has been connecting people with the marine and shoreline life, as well as Alameda history. Visitors can see bay creatures in the 800-gallon aquarium system, use interactive stations to view microscopic animals, build a crab from the inside out, or get a lug worm's view of the mudflats.
In the Boys Hopes event, the withdrawal of Alameda’s Jayden Diep with a broken finger left 15 boys in 4 groups with 2 advancing from each group. The 8 advancing boys were: Darryl Tsao, Arjun Chandrasekar, Ryan Wu, Raghav Thiruvallur, Avi Gupta, Victor Xie, Jason Lee, and Varun Mangeshkar. The semis final matchups saw Darryl overcome Raghav 12-10,11-5,13-11 and Avi defeat Varun 11-7,11-5,11-7.
In the final Darryl lost the first game at 9 before asserting himself in 3 tight games which he won 12-10,11-8,11-9.
In the girls event there were 2 groups of 4 with 2 advancing. In semi final 1 Dana Yeo defeated Kayla Goodwin 11-4, 12-10, 12-10. In semi final 2 Natalie Chan defeated Isha Baipai 11-9,14-12,11-9.
