US Players Win Medals At Australian National Veterans Table Tennis Championships

The 2017 Australian National Veterans Table Tennis Championships were held October 7 to October 14 in Mandurah, Western Australia.  The tournament lasts for eight days and includes men’s and women’s teams and individual events in multiple age groups.  This annual tournament, Australia’s largest table tennis tournament , is hosted in a different state each year.  This year, 416 players competed from Australia as well as New Zealand, Wales, Vietnam, China, Latvia, Japan, and the USA, playing a total of 4062 team matches and 1679 individual matches. 

Competition was intense and of very high-caliber, including the following World Veterans Table Tennis Championship (WVTTC) medal winners:

  1. Two current (2016) and five former (2014) World Veterans Gold Medalists.
  2. Five current (2016) and two former (2014) World Veterans Silver Medalists.
  3. One current (2016) and five former (2014) World Veterans Bronze Medalists.

[The next World Veterans Table Tennis Championships (2018) will be held June 18-24 in Las Vegas.]

The US Players participating in this tournament were Khoa Nguyen (San Jose, CA), Phong Pham (Denver, CO), Tuan Le (Orange County, CA), Hau Lam (Portland, OR), and Dan Green (Ocean Pines, MD).  Winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s Teams 50 and Over event were Khoa Nguyen, Tuan Le, and Hau Lam on a five person team sponsored by FDI Co., LTD, a major cargo and freight company headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.  Although no gold or silver medals were won by the US players in the individual events, three bronze medals were won by Khoa Nguyen for 40 and Over Men’s Singles, 40 and Over Mixed Doubles, and 50 and Over Mixed Doubles.  Tuan Le won one bronze medal for 50 and Over Mixed Doubles.  Dan Green won one bronze medal for 70 and Over Mixed Doubles.  The final awards, the 2017 Order of Merit, were announced at the awards night dinner.  This prestigious award is given to the top ten players by age grouping that had the best teams and individual results.  Tuan Le was awarded #2 in the Over 50 Men, Khoa Nguyen #3 in the Over 50 Men, and Dan Green #3 in the Over 70 Men.

When asked about the Australian National Veterans tournament, US players said this was one of the best run tournaments they have played. The tournament organizing committee and volunteers did an excellent job.  Matches were on time.  Results were posted promptly on the tournament website at http://www.southerntabletennis.org.au/vets2017/results.htm.  The tournament software used was CATTS, written by Brian James.  This full function tournament software is available for download at no charge.
